Ariel Sharon Career Question

At dinner with some friends a few weeks ago, I got into discussion with a chap who works in International Relations/Politics/Policy. We got talking about the situation in the Middle East and he made the following comment (or words to the effect of):

The problem with Ariel Sharon’s current action is that it is too short-term focused. Sharon was a successful soldier because of his ability to achieve short-term objectives (capture that hill, attack that tank), but he left the IDF after an incident where orders were interpreted in the short-term which led to disasterous long-term effects

Now I realise that there is possibly a Great Debate in the first sentance, but I do not feel able to start it off - if anyone else wants to, go ahead… What I am asking about is the second sentance, about Sharon leaving the IDF.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

He might be referring to the attacks on Palestinian refugee camps by the Christian Lebanese army who at the time were under Sharon’s “authority” (but not under his direct control). I think an IDF investigation found him partially responsible.

This is the only incident I can think of…
