The other day I re-read Breaking with Moscow by Arkady Shevchenko, a high-ranking Soviet diplomat who defected to the U.S. in 1978. One of the choices he made was that he came alone - his wife was shipped back to Moscow where she reportedly committed suicide, and his son and daughter were in the U.S.S.R. at the time.
He died in 1998. I was sruck again by the sadness of his choice, and wondered if he ever got to see his children again, once the U.S.S.R. disintegrated. Could he possibly have gone back to Russia, or would it have been too dangerous for him? Did they come see him in the U.S., or did they believe him a traitor?
Anyone have any idea?
