Army Q: What's the CV's?

Ok, you Army dudes! What is the CV’s (CVies? Ceevies?) in the Army? Is it related to the Army Corps of Civil Engineers? - Jinx

P.S. That’s not rain; it’s Ranger Sunshine!

I haven’t been in the Army for many years, but I suspect that what you overheard was talk of “civies,” meaning civilian clothes. As in, “I’m getting into my civies and going to town.”

Well, there are the SeeBees which are naval combat engineers. Is that what you mean?

The only other thing I can think of would the the CUCV (Commerical Utility Cargo Vehicle ), which was more or less replaced in function by the HMV a.k.a HUMMV (High Mobility Vehicle).

I was Air Force but I’m going to go with “civies” too.

I see someone else watched Leave it to Beaver on TVLand tonight.

In the Navy, CV is the designation of an aircraft carrier.

I think Jinx is thinking of the Navy’s SeaBees.

Jinx, could you expand on how you heard or saw this term being used? There could be a few things here:

CV- carrier designation

SeaBees- Navy construction folks who build stuff and and tear stuff down. Most notable SeaBee? John Wayne, of course, in “The Fighting SeaBees

civies(1)- Civilian clothing, as opposed to the uniform. As in, “Hey, XO, can we shift to civies, get in the GV and hit the clubs?”

civies(2) Civilian employee of the armed forces. As in, “There’s a civie machinist from base industrial coming down to fix that pump that you frigged up”

Probably a few others…

The context I heard it in was that Ward Cleaver was describing to Wally and Beaver what he did during the war. He said he spent most of his time making sure the ground was level for setting up camps and other things like that.

BTW, if Jinx hadn’t asked this question, I was going to. I’m not sure if this is the context Jinx heard the term used, though.

I’m going to assume Ward meant the Navy SeaBees. Thanks, Chandeleur and Squish and lokij.

In the Air Force we designate the Commander’s office position as a “CC”. As in, my Squadron Commander is a Sqn/CC. The Vice Commander (or deputy) is designated by CV.

Therefore, in my squadron, a LtCol is the CES/CC, while a Major is the CES/CV.

Tripler
I’m a little lower on the totem pole, tho. . .

So you know, Jinx, the term sprang from the acronym for Construction Batallion.
