What’s the deal with this?

It’s seems rather odd to switch Martas in midstream.

I love my fellow Dopers, I really do, but no one does Arrested Development analysis like those yeshiva students over at Television Without Pity.

It seems like it was a fluke, but I do recall some sort of vague swipe at Marta #1 in a DVD commentary.
I could be wrong, but I believe there is a third Marta, who shows up in a season 3 flashback.
Also, if you are new to the show, you’ll also notice that the actress playing Ann/Plant/Bland/Hog switched after her first appearance.

There are a couple of jokes at her expense. Whatever the situation, they seemed to like Marta 2 better. I’m guessing they recast the role after deciding the first one “didn’t work out.” The use of a third Marta in that flashback is probably just a joke for the fans.

I was actually going to put “the three martas” in the subject line (because that’s how I remembered it), but on a quick check of the IMDB only showed two different actresses, so…

We don’t really know for sure that it was the same Marta in that flashback. I don’t think we saw her face, and Michael didn’t really have to introduce her to his family since they already knew her via GOB. I don’t think they list any of the women who appeared in those flashbacks, so that seems inconclusive.

I believe the third Marta did not have a line; folks without lines are not typically listed in the credits.

Patricia Velasquez did a fine job, but I thought the first Marta was the best. Not only was she astoundingly beautiful, I thought the scene she played at the awards show (in last night’s rerun) was really well acted.

True. But I seem to remember that one of the flashback Martas looked pretty much NOTHING like the other two. Didn’t she have, like, super-huge breasts - so much so that Buster was immitating her by shoving balloons(?) in his shirt?

That was a flashback, but it wasn’t a Marta flashback.
