ARS - where incompetence rules

ARS is American Residential Services. With no “handy” type people in my house, we call them for plumbing, electrical, appliance type issues. They’ve always done a good job, until now.

On Dec 22, we called them to repair a leak which seemed to be coming from the toilet area. The floor was wet in the bathroom, the carpet was wet in the separate vanity area, and on the other side of the wall from the vanity in the dining room. They said we needed a new toilet. We bought one.

On Dec 24, the carpets were still wet. They said we could pay $96 dollars for them to come out on Christmas. We declined, and they showed up Dec 26. They tightened something on the toilet, and said that would fix our problem.

On Jan 2, the carpets are still wet. We called them to come out again. A different guy comes out at with no knowledge of the problem. He can’t find the leak. He says he’ll come back tomorrow with a supervisor.

On Jan 3, new guy, no supervisor, same shit. He’ll call tomorrow with news.

On Jan 4, we’re not available. They don’t leave a message. We call again, explaining the whole fucking situation again, to another person who doesn’t know anything.

On Jan 5, the guys who installed the toilet come back out at 6:00 pm. They poke large holes in the drywall, move stuff out of cabinets, go up in the attic, move the refrigerator out (the toilet backs up to that wall), and generally make a big mess. They say they’ll have to get a supervisor out in the morning, they can’t find the leak, and they need to contact the landlord about putting holes in the walls. They leave my house all trashed with drywall everywhere, attic stairs down, and shit still out of cabinets. (I made them move the fridge back.)

On Jan 6, we wait around all morning. We call about our “morning” appointment and are told it will be early afternoon, they’re behind schedule. At 6:30 pm, some wet behind the ears punk shows up, pokes around a bit, and says he knows it’s coming from the shower. Bullshit! Never mind, son.

On Jan 8, another new guy shows up at 6:00 pm. He’s only been told there is a “customer satisfaction” issue. My husband tries to be civil, but tells this guy in no uncertain terms that ARS’s treatment of us sucks green donkey dicks, and they better do something quick. He proceeds to call home base and explain the entire problem to “customer satisfaction” lady.

On Jan 9, 2 guys show up at 9:00 am. They find the leak behind the sinks in the vanity area. They repair the leak. They clean up their mess. They replace the sheetrock back into the holes neatly. They do a good job.

19 days later.

ARS, you suck!

Your landlord must be a real dickhole if he provides such lousy service. When you move out, make absolutely sure that you take photos of your house after you clean it, and don’t let the landlord or his representative write down anything they can’t prove. Then, if they try to withhold some of your deposit, show them the pictures and threaten small claims court. Withholding a deposit for any reason other than damage above normal wear and tear is illegal (at least it is in Ohio and California) and they can be sued for triple damages. Don’t ask me how I discovered this.

WOW! And I thought I was incompetent due to my lack of understanding… but fuck me running… I think I would have solved your problem before the “professionals” did! I’m glad it got solved, eventually, but I agree with City Gent; get good photos of what damage was done due to their incompetence so you aren’t charged for that when you leave.

My very best to you and yours!

OK, now for a contrarian opinion. There’s nothing harder to find than a leak in plumbing.

a. It’s all hidden behind walls. Often tiled walls. When diagnosing, you want to minimize the number of walls you rip holes in.
b. Water doesn’t stay put. It flows and might manifest far from the actual leak.
c. The problem is often a pinhole leak. Those things are bastards to find.

So yeah, the process sucked and took longer than it should. They persisted. They fixed it. They cleaned up after themselves. I’m thinking this is not the lousiest service I’ve ever heard of.
