Art/food you had been avoiding, that you find is "not that bad."

When he was at his prime and taking care of himself, his voice, showmanship and use of his body as an instrument had no equal. The dance movements alone: no wonder our parents hated him.

I recently tried green tea. I’d always expected it to taste like a salad, somehow. It doesn’t, and I find I really like it.

Was in Central Mexico a few weeks ago so had the chance to try lots of sauces and preparations you just don’t find in States (I live Texas so we’ve got plenty of good and varied options). I’m a pretty adventurous eater so gladly embraced the variety, even enjoying ants and crickets which just give a little crunch and nutty flavor. The only item I had reservations about was when our host ordered pickled pigs feet at a bar. Turns out they were delicious! Especially with an ice cold cerveza.

(continuing the slight tangent)
Tight doesn’t even begin to describe that band!

I can’t speak for the other instruments or vocalists, but as a bassist, that bass player is playing more notes in one measure than I play in an entire session, and he looks totally chill while doing so.

I love how Elvis was messing with the backup singer, giving her a quick scare (rehearsed or not, it was cool). For another fun ride, watch the same song from the concert in Honolulu.

That’s three kinds.

That is definitely true at Bob’s Country Bunker!

LOL at Gato and Minor.

Johnny Ray. His most famous song is “Cry”. I remember hearing it a lot when it came out, but it didn’t get me interested in him.

Much later I heard Stan Freberg’s Try, which lampooned Ray’s song. (At that time, Ray was furious, but later realized it was getting his song more air play because DJs would play “Cry” followed by “Try”!)

A year or 2 ago a half-hour special performance by Ray showed up in my searches. I thought I’d watch a little of it. I watched the whole thing! I thought he was a really good performer and put his whole self into it. I was impressed and very entertained!

Am I a fan? Have I listened to all of his stuff? No and no. But imagine if a friend had said he’d pay for me to go to one of his performances and said, “Afterwards, if you really don’t think it was worth it, it’s free. Otherwise, pay me.” I would’ve gone to the performance thinking, “Well, it’s free, so why not?” I would’ve paid my friend.

Oysters. Avoided them for years because one of my grad school committee members basically forced me to eat one in a landlocked state (he said “eat it or I won’t sign your thesis”). It was disgusting.

Years later was visiting family in Boston and we went out to an oyster bar. I demurred at first, stating I hated oysters because I thought they tasted like slimy rotten mucus. He looked at me and said “good oysters don’t taste like that”.

They were delicious. Turns out oysters served in a chain sports bar in the middle of Texas in the early 2000’s were not of the best quality…

I stayed away from blackberries for a long time. They just looked a little scary to me. Then one day I’m at a wine tasting and see that they have some olallieberry jam on offer. I had absolutely no idea what an olallieberry might be, but I was in an adventurous mood, so I tried the jam and really liked it. When I got home later that evening, I futzed around on the computer to see what I had eaten and found out that an olallieberry is basically a blackberry’s first cousin.
