art history terms that i just don't understand

what are the meanings of these terms:

  1. dada
    2.avant-garde
    3.fauve
  2. analytical cubism
  3. futurist manifesto

Dada - a child’s hobby horse, chosen for no reason, because the art of that name is done as a reaction against reason.

Avant-garde - from a military term for a scouting party: to mean way out ahead of the rest

Fauve (Fr. "beast) - from a art review of a show that featured, inconguously, a classic statue in the middle of a room whose walls were hung with Mattises: “Donatello among the beasts.” The name stuck to the group of artists.

Analytical Cubism(my over-simplified definition): a method devised by Picasso and Braque for portraying volume by showing all the planes at once.

Futurist Manifesto: by an Italian group that enjoyed all the energy of the Dadists but, in the oposite direction, were determimed that art needs to have a very dynamic reason, and as its purpose the entire remodeling of society (Italy at the time was in sore need of remodeling). Unfortunately, while Dada led mostly to a lot of nihlistic fun, Futurism got caught up in Fascism.

Why do you ask?

silthy-
i sit in my art history class and just don’t understand. i believe it’s because my art history professor doesn’t speak well english. thank you

Try http://www.artlex.com - I use this site a lot myself.

It has an extensive list of art terms and definitions, as well as links to artworks.

For example, if you looked up ‘Dada’, you’ll also be given a list of works and artists that are ‘Dadaist’.

Sounds like someone is taking Modern Art 101. These are not really “art historical terms” but rather are “art movements” or categories art historians use. Some movements were very specific and had membership lists, some groups were more vague and aligned only by aesthetic similarities.
