Does anyone else hate the name "Cafe Society"?

I wasn’t sure if this should be an IMHO thread or an ATMB
thread. Hopefully, I picked the right one…

Doesn’t this name basically serve to perpetuate a
stereotype of artistic people hanging out in cafes?
I consider myself a fan of many art forms. But I hate
cafes. I am sure there are many others like me. And
I guess this is why the name makes me angry!!!

(If there were some scientific evidence that artistic people
hang out in cafes, then I would retract my complaint.
But I don’t think it is true. Please correct me if I am
wrong.)

You don’t need to, and in fact probably shouldn’t, hit enter at the end of each line. Unless that was supposed to be free verse.

well what i find intersting is ‘cafe society’ doesn’t really fit into the naming conventions of other catagories - perhaps ‘arts and entertainment questions’ or the ‘arts society’ if they want to keep the society in hte title might have been a better title. But I’m not offended by it but don’t plan to visit it much as it is not my cup of tea.

but that’s just my humble O

I’m with k2dave. I held back posting to the Bill H thread until I gave that forum a chance.

Well, I’ve given that forum a chance and even now I can’t even get past the name of it. “Cafe Society”. Every time I see that I immediately think ::Starbucks… STARBUCKS!!::

Those damn places are everywhere now.

I haven’t been in there, or Starbucks, yet… those places scare me.

I’m artistic (perhaps arty at times) and also fond of cafés, caffès and Kaffee Klatchen.

So, do you have any better name suggestions? It took us a couple of months to come up with that one.

I think the problem is that, for some inexplicable reason, you’re associating Starbucks with the word “Cafe”. I don’t see the connection.

I don’t much care for the name either–it’s a bit too artsy-fartsy for me. I’m creative and write fiction and all that, but the image I get from “Cafe Society” is one that just doesn’t fit me at all.

How 'bout something like That’s Entertainment?

If you ask me, I like the name, “Arts and Entertainment”, proposed by k2dave above.

I don’t know why, it just has that ring to it. Plus, it makes it sound all noble like the A&E channel tries to be.

“Cafe Society” just sounds so… so… coffee house cheesy. It’s friends “Central Perk” smarmy - You know, like, I, just gag me with a spoon already, yiiii!. Let’s go have a triple cafe double decaf, huh!?!

It’s so… smug.

Go with the details. Go with the technical, straight up, nothing but the truth here, name- “Arts and Entertainment”.

Simplicity, and straightforwardness, rules!!

A couple months and you couldn’t post it asking for suggestions? Why all the hush-hush then suddenly spring it on us. Or did you ask and I just missed it - it doesn’t seem so from the post here in ATMB?

I know this is your board and you can do whatever you want with it but I see no reason why you didn’t keep us informed and/or ask for input if you were wrestling with it for a couple of months.

Hyperbolized!

That’s the damn word I was looking for.

Cafe society sounds too hyperbolized a term when comparing it to the other forums.

The other forums are straight up and to the point.

The hyperbolization in the cafe forum name seems oddly out of context when taken with the others.
Ahhh. Much better now.

I have considered opening a cafe called Pseud’s Place - a Pseud being a pseudo-intellectual. For my kind of people, who like to hang out and discuss art and cinema and drink coffee, but who are sheepishly aware of how quickly such conversations can… um, shall we say, “go very deeply into the surface of things”? Not that I’m suggesting that’s what’ll happen in Cafe Society. I’ve barely visited, but the thread titles seem very interesting. It’s just what happens when my friends enter a cafe!

I consider myself a pseudo-intellectual. One with intellect enough to have some fascination with art, but humility enough to regard my fascination as a learning process.

That’s what I’d have called it, anyway. Given that Central Perk and Starbucks are taken.

See, that’s the problem right there. You guys tried handling this within the moderator mode. When are you going to learn that moderators can’t do anything right. Once you’re given that title, all the brains are sucked out of your head.

Leave it to us… we can name it.

Yes. It suggests highbrow and ‘artsy-fartsy’ stuff, when rock/pop music and TV like The Simpsons have just as much place there.

No need to be cruel! Cut them some slack. It’s not easy to think when your brains are sucked out, but they don’t need to be reminded of it all the time.

Don’t blame me. I wanted to name it Three Tenors To Three Stooges, or TTTTS for short.

Much better! Do we have a second on the motion? All in favor say aye.

Aye aye! Much better!

So, Tsarcasm, how do you think that folks would end up pronouncing that one?

And when do I get my brains back? I’m going to need 'em in a few days here…

ooh, I like that. Artsy Fartsy becoming the new forum name gets my vote.

Aye. A much better indication of the forum’s range.
