Arthur Kantrowitz Dies, Founder of Avco Everett Lab and L5 Chairman

Thayer School regrets to announce that Professor of Engineering, Emeritus Arthur Kantrowitz died of heart failure on Saturday, November 29th, 2008. He was in New York City surrounded by his family and died peacefully at Lennox Hill Hospital. He was 95.

It was Athur’s wish to be cremated, and there will be no funeral. Most of his ashes will be scattered in the ocean where he loved to be on his sailboat. The rest will be under a marker near his parents’ grave at the Kantrowitz plot in the New Montefiore Cemetery in Long Island. A memorial service is planned for sometime in 2009, probably in the Boston area.

Arthur’s wife, Lee Stuart, is working on a memorial website where she will invite everyone to share their thoughts and memories. More information to come.

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Prof. Arthur Kantrowitz, a founding Advisor of Foresight Institute and an early supporter of molecular nanotechnology concepts when they were first developed at MIT in the late 1970s by then-student K. Eric Drexler.

Arthur was an amazingly innovative scientist and technologist, as described in his Wikipedia entry, which is worth reading. The fact forums described in Engines of Creation were an extension of Arthur’s Science Court concept.
