What is then offered as the confirming data for this national upswing is a list of 21 people killed in what appear to mainly relationship fights or garden variety street crime. It seems that every trans person murdered is being forced into a hate crime matrix for the purposes of the claims being made. Am I reading the data wrong. Is there something I’m missing?
Not enough of the correct education of the children up to & including PHD programs.
The fact that Religions exist/have not been shut down & then educated out of humanity the world over.
A lack of the correct form of tolerance being taught in the home & schools.
The historic and very predominant instinct of mammals to kill those that are different which people want to proclaim that it should go away tomorrow due to their lack of understanding of what & how long that takes even if they can magically fix 50% of their town ( forget the whole world ) with the slow progress being made with different skin colors which much of the educated world is still struggling with.
The OP is not ↑↑↑↑ this enough which I feel is why he thinks he is missing something… IMO. He is not a ‘one trick pony’ so does not subscribe to the above so to be able to read the statistics and come to the proper fear level. ( He needs to re-learn the saying {There are lies, damn lies and statistics.} )
The effort is & should be made, me doing everything I can in my local position is not much even at just the town level.
Many things I am very tolerant about, others I have to work on the tolerance and if am threatened or frightened, I may regress in the time before clear thinking kicks in.
Those that suffer, want instant fixes and historically , even with full on dictatorship with religious backing & most people on board does not change everyone. Or so actual history seems to show.
Keep on doing all you can to fix it but do not spend the time on statistics that don’t change anything other than filling you with fear/dread/no desire to go on & do the part you are responsible for and quit looking for things to be all negative and a person no one wants to be around.
If it’s true that 50% of LGBT people murdered are trans women and 35% are gay men, that must mean that more trans women than gay men are killed every year. I don’t know the stats but surely there are A LOT more gay men than trans women in the US? Which would make the trans women murder rate shockingly high.
In the article there is a link to the Advocate which claims 26 murders of transgenders this year. That is a murder rate of 2 per 100,000. That is less than half of the murder rate for the entire country. Apparently society is very protective of the lives of the transgendered.
Some of any uptick in the deaths of transgender persons due to more of us coming out each year. Going by my estimate (based on my working at a transgender counseling center and being a transgender media person) I’d be shocked if there weren’t at least 4-5 times as many of us out and visible, compared to 2012. But another factor is that due to greater and greater police acceptance and tolerance, and more avenues for support available (Planned Parenthood, for example, kicked off a huge transgender support effort this year) there are almost certainly more cases being reported to the police.
Things are changing - we have safety in numbers, and increasing numbers of us are legally carrying weapons and ready to use them. At our Transgender Day of Remembrance ceremony last night a group of young white males came by with a TRUMP banner flying, and used slurs and threats against us, shouting and pumping their fists. But out of about 240 people in the crowd, nearly a dozen of us were legally carrying weapons, and most of us doing so were retired military combat veterans. There was going to be no trans-bashing at our event, by golly.
I am comparing the rate that transgenders are murdered to the rate the general population.
The only alternative I could think of was transgendered people and that sounds even more awkward.
About three quarters of the women on their named list are black women. That can’t possibly be an exhaustive list of every trans woman in America who was murdered last year, unless all the white trans women have a halo of anti-murder protection (in a country where the total murder number is about 15 thousand)
