Articles of Clothing You Just Can't Seem to Find in Stores

For about a year now, I’ve been looking for a hooded sweatshirt. But not just any hoodie – I want one that’s (a) lightweight and (b) zip-up in © a solid color with (d) minimal writing and decoration on it. Bonus if it’s (e) good quality; I don’t mind spending $60 or so on it. I know they’re out there. I’ve seen people wearing them. But every hoodie I find in stores is deficient on at least one of the counts above. (Most often, it’s either really heavy, or else it’s not zip-up, or else it’s got some giant ornate freaking sword pattern all over the front. Gah.)

So what kind of things do y’all always have your eye out for, and are unable to find?

One of those cute little Chinese cheong-sahm tops. I see them online, of course, but I’d like to find one in a brick and mortar store, so I could actually try it on. Especially since they’re so expensive. Ditto a cheong-sahm dress, but especially the little tops. They’re so cute.

Would something like this work?

Good question. To answer, I’d need to know two things. First, whether those hoodies are lightweight or not. Second, whether they come in men’s sizes.

  1. Tube socks, say with 1 or 2 blue stripes at the top. I don’t like plain white and I certainly don’t want logos.

  2. Plain dark blue or black sneakers. White doesn’t work in the Land of Clay and who thought having neon colors on shoes was a good idea? Doesn’t anybody make clothes for adults anymore?

A slip. Not a sexy lingerie slip, but a functional slip. I mean, it could look sexy if it was also functional, but I don’t want to pay the sexiness mark-up at a store like VS.

I was at K-Mart the other day, which I thought would be the perfect place to buy a (cheap) slip, and no slips! What’s up with that?

Custom Hoody

there ya go…put what you like on it, or I’m sure nothing at alll, if you prefer.

I have a lot of articles of clothing that I can’t find in stores- pretty much basic stuff like skirts, tops. The problem is that I have a pretty specific picture in my mind of what I want, so if I find a similar item in a store, little differences from that picture puts me off wanting the item- example being that the length was too short, the color was wrong, there’s too many pieces of decorative crap sewn on…blah blah blah.

I solved the problem by learning how to sew and making my own garments. Not only does the finished product look exactly the way I want it to, the fit is perfect. I realize that not everybody has this option, but finding an experienced seamstress or dressmaker might be worth it if you really, really want what you’re looking for.

For a wedding I’m going to in a few weeks, I want a semiformal dress that isn’t black, doesn’t cost $200 and up, and doesn’t make me look like either a cheap hooker or the Mother of the Bride.

I’m not 60 years old, dammit, and I don’t want to dress like I am! And spaghetti straps are not a good look for me - I need more, um, infrastructure than that, and I refuse to wear strapless bras because they are evil. Are straps really too much to ask? Preferably at least 2" wide? And am I weird or something for not wanting to wear black to a wedding?

I found a relatively inexpensive one at Kohls; you might try looking there.

Plain old medium weight blue denim shirts are now a major fashion nono. My favorite 10-year-old example ripped down the middle and now I can’t even find one on clearance.

Denim jackets are perfectly OK, though. :dubious:

Guinastasia: Here’s a pattern for a cheong sam dress and top. And here’s another pattern for some more tops. These patterns are often on sale at fabric and craft stores for a buck or two, and brocade seems to be always on sale at Joann’s Fabrics. Hint, hint…

Sigh. I’ve been looking for a pair of chocolate brown jeans that aren’t cut so low that the top of my underwear hangs out. I can find lots of tops in this color, but no jeans. Corduroy? Check! Dress pants? Check! Skirts? You betcher! Jeans? No way, Jose.

Vests, or something vest-like, to make jeans and a shirt look more together, more like an “outfit”.

I had some a few years ago, got tired of them and gave them away. Now I want them back.

I guess they’d be easy to make, but I’m too lazy.

Anybody seen any vests lately?

Ask and ye shall receive.

I just bought one myself. IRL the stitching isn’t contrasty like in the pic but blends almost completely with the cloth. Also, the hood lining isn’t white as shown.

If you come up to Tysons Corners to get it, I’ll meet you for a drink and give you my opinion on fit.

Hey, that’s something!

The offer of a drink sounds good as well…only problem is that I’ll have to wait till they complete that Metro extension out to Tyson’s, as I don’t have a car.

So now I need to find an Old Navy near me. Man, I never thought I’d say those words…

Thanks. Now if I only had a sewing machine. :frowning:

For super simple basic clothing, I like American Apparel. I hate their hipper-than-thou stores, but the clothes are good. And they’re made in the US, supposedly by people being paid a living wage, so I don’t feel guilty about supporting child labor. Try this sweatshirt. I’m wearing the girl version of that sweatershirt in dark red at this moment.

Guinastasia, envy me: I have a gorgeous blue silk chi pao that my mom found for $12 in a thrift store in San Francisco. The hem had been all ripped to shreds, but my mom is a quilter and a seamstress and she hemmed it back up beautifully.

Personally, I would kill (well, maybe a bug) for a pair of nice loafers that fit my feet properly. I wear, in an ideal world that does not seem to exist, size 9.5AAA. Almost any shoe without laces slips off my heels every time I take a step. I’m pretty much limited to shoes sized narrow - and even those are usually too wide. Argh. I can’t wait until I’m rich and can a. have shoes handmade to fit me correctly or b. tell anyone who doesn’t like my wearing sneakers every day to fuck off.

Kyla, that looks perfect. I’m ordering it right now. Thanks!

Size 15 running shoes. I don’t want to buy them online. I want to try them on first. I will be doing alot of running in these, and don’t want to spend the cash just to find out they don’t fit right. Being in Korea dosen’t help, but even in the US I would have to go to 3 or 4 places before I could find running shoes in a 15. Dress shoes wern’t a problem, but apperently people with big feet don’t run.
