Articles of Clothing You Just Can't Seem to Find in Stores

Long underwear pants that don’t come up to my waist. I want them to stay under my pants, when it gets real cold at work. I don’t wear pants so low that this should really be a problem, but yet it is. Is there anything less attractive than a girl in cute pants who bends over and you can see her pink Land’s End long underwear? Ergh.

And I hate to tell you guys this, but some of you can’t find what you want because you have awful taste in clothes.

It seems like I’ve been looking for an XL wool plaid thermal snood for ages.

Batman Underoos, size 38.

I keed, I keed!

I’ve got everything I need, but my manager is a tall and thin young woman – easily six foot, if not more. So skinny, if she turns sideways, she disappears. She says that it’s remarkably hard to buy anything “fun” for a woman of her proportions. She can buy businesswear and plain-color casuals, but she’s really got to hardscrabble to find a kicky print or anything that could be described as funky.

It is true that if you can’t find any version of what you want (as opposed to just the perfect version of something that is available) anywhere, it’s probably out of style and it might be time to update your wardrobe.

It happened to me a few years past with straight legged jeans. Low waisted boot cuts were the only things in the stores and you’d only see straight legged jeans buried in the back on the clearence racks. That’s when I realized that it was probably time to adjust my tastes. And now that I’m totally comfortable with and like low rise boot cuts, high waisted tapered legs are coming back in style. Argh.

I defy you to tell me that THIS is “awful.”

Elegant, exotic, colorful, yet classic. Wear with a black skirt for a dressy look, with jeans to be funky.

YES! Why do they make all the thermal underwear as if you’re only supposed to wear them under turtlenecks? I don’t need to wear them under a turtleneck. I need them to go under lighter blouses. The best solution I’ve found so far is to pin the cuffs of the thermals up so they don’t show and to only wear them under higher-collared shirts. Not ideal, but the only thing I’ve come up with so far.

If you find these, let me know!

Anything made in the United States (or Canada, for that matter) that isn’t uber-trendy (American Apparel, high-end jeans) or intended for deer hunting and “the jobsite.” You can get American-made socks and t-shirts rather easily, but everything else is a challenge. I’ve got a pair of US-made New Balance sneakers, US-made Carolina oxfords (steel toe and heavy as hell; again designed for the “jobsite” market, but still dressy enough for office work), lots of US-made socks, t-shirts and basic sweatshirts, and that’s about it. Can’t find Bill’s Khakis around here, even at Nordstrom’s.

If I take the next step and go “fair trade,” that means high-end European clothes, and I’m not about to drop $300 for an Italian-made dress shirt. Old-school men’s stores where the bulk of inventory is made in the US, UK and Ireland are a dying breed.

Pfui. I was a teenager in the '70s, and people used to make fun of me because I dressed like it was still the '60s…Levi’s, workshirts, secondhand tweed jackets, vests, etc. Now we look at old photos and WHO looked like an asshole, huh? Nice leisure suit, Sparky.

Speaking of vests, I’m looking for one with lapels. Never saw one anywhere in the U.S. – did come across one in a haberdashery in the Connemara, but it ran about 200 buck, American.

eBay. Saw some like that a while ago. It’ll take somm looking, of course. They also make new vests for Cowboy Action shooting, and they often have lapels.

This reminds me, although it doesn’t really help, now that I think of it. The sporting goods chain Academy carries 15s in-store–I saw at least four pairs one day while shopping there. So while it’s rare, it does happen.

Hey, I didn’t say which posters were the offenders, did I? Those tops can be really be cute on some people; I see them fairly often for sale, but they come and go.

Cheap, good women’s thermal underwear without lace. Why do people think just because I am a girl, that I want frills?

Really nice men’s shoelaces.

Sounds stupid, I know, but when you buy a pair of men’s shoes they come with really nice laces. Break them, and good luck finding a replacement lace that looks anywhere as nice. I found some at a Bass Outlet, but even their replacement laces weren’t as nice as the ones that come with the shoes.

It’s a conspiracy to sell new shoes when the laces break, I tells ya…

I know, I was just teasing. I should have used a smiley, I guess.

I’ll probably find one eventually. I’d order online, but I really want to try them on, since they’re fitted, and I want to make sure I get the right size and such.

Women’s plus-size non-casual slacks with pockets. Not Dockers, but something you could wear in a business-casual atmosphere.

Yes, I know they make my hips look huge and my stomach look poochy whether or not I have anything in them. I still want them.

Oh, and if I could have my slacks without sequins or kicky embroidery that’d be nice, thanks.

Plus sized clothes for people under 20 who aren’t in a professional workplace. I live in Canada, Hot Topic and Torrid are forever away, and I don’t want to buy online bcause of their shipping charges and I can’t find out if they’d accept returns from Caada anyway. I’m sick and tired of the tacky clothes at Penningtons - even the MXM line is 90% crap. Corset style tops for people who are more than a size 15 would be cool too.

Pants the right length. I’m too short for “average”, but Petites hit me just above the ankle. I want those suckers to go down almost to the bottom of my foot, but not quite. I think I have 1 pair that are the right length.

Yeah, I know - take them to be altered. Dammit, men get their pants in choice of inseam, and/or get alterations free. I want the same.

Plus-sized women’s clothing that don’t assume I have huge boobs. My T-shirts and such are fine, but anytime I try on something dressier (read: non-stretchy), it’s cut for someone who’s at least a DD, while I’m just barely a C.

Wow, I often have the opposite problem!

Very cute, but I’m not much on the earth tones - they make me look jaundiced. Why are they always Little Black Dresses? Why not red, or purple, or turquoise? I can’t be the only one.
