Is it possible for a robot to use a laser or sonar or something to scan an area in front of it and collect range data from many points and correlate that with an image collected from a camera?
Thanks for your help,
Rob

Yes.
Is it currently being done?
Thanks,

The DARPA Grand Challenge has been one of the more recent high profile examples. Vehicles using cameras, Lidar, and other technologies to steer themselves through urban and offroad terrain.
The more interesting question is how quickly it can be done. Computer vision tends to require a lot of CPU cycles.
Didn’t Stanley, the 2005 Darpa Grand Challenge winner do it in realtime?
