A few years ago no team could handle the desert. Then several teams finished that challge so DARPA made things more difficult by having the carbots navigate an Urban develeopment.

Of the teams that didn’t finish on time (but did finish) I like the Ben Franklin team - they used a Prius and computing was on 7 Mac Minis. Aparently they were the only team to finish without $1M DARPA seed money.

I saw a Nova program about last year’s race, and have been on the lookout for the results of this year’s challenge, which looked even cooler than the last one. I really hope they have another Nova on the Urban Challenge, as it is much easier to fully appreciate the awesome of self-navigating cars in video, rather than a text article.
