Artists that supplied entire soundtracks for movies

I can only think of a few… Who made Who by AC/DC being the soundtrack to Maximum Overdrive and also Queen doing the soundtrack to Highlander. Any more? When was the last time this happened?

Well, America did The Last Unicorn, and Tangerine Dream did a whole lot of movies of a certain era - I’m thinking Thief and Manhunter.

Mark Knopfler did *Princess Bride *(good movie) and Last Exit to Brooklyn (not so good movie)

Yentl, by Barbara Streisand. Probably other of her movies also.

Oops. He also did Local Hero.

I think Tom Petty did the entire soundtrack to She’s the One.

Off the top of my head, Randy Newman’s done the soundtracks for numerous movies, most notably Pixar’s Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, and Monsters Inc. films.

I’m not sure what you mean by “supplied entire soundtracks”. There is certainly a group of composers who are responsible for writing and producing all soundtrack music for their films–John Barry, Michael Kamen, Vangelis, Lalo Schifrin, Jerry Goldsmith, and Elmer Bernstein to name a few–but of course this is mostly orchastral music which is performed by a large group. Except for the pop music selections in Donnie Darko, Mike Andrews produced and performed all the incidentals himself, but that’s pretty rare. This may be true with some Vangelis scores as well, though again he often uses orchastral accompanyment in addition to layered tracks of synthesized music.

Didnt Queen also release an album for Flash Gordon?

The Maximum Overdrive is a good example of what I’m talking about. AC/DC’s album taken entirely for the movie. Hence, the name of the album is Who made Who; Soundtrack to the motion picture Maximum Overdrive.

Every song played in highlander is a queen song. I’m not talking about the score. The soundtrack.

What about Simon and Garfunkel and The Graduate? I think they did almost, maybe not quite everything. Those that weren’t S&G were mostly cocktail/swing numbers.

I think we need to separate soundtrack and score. Are we looking for someone who did both?
For (a completely random) example, Dave Grusin did the score for The Goonies, but there are also songs by REO Speedwagon, Cyndi Lauper, etc.
For Beauty and the Beast, Alan Menken wrote the score, and, together with Howard Ashman, wrote the songs, too.
Or are we looking for something more like The Graduate soundtrack?

Speaking of completely random, it so happens that Dave Grusin also did the non-Paul Simon music for The Graduate.

1970 I believe, Elton John did the soundtrack to a movie called Friends. No, I didn’t just google that, I actually own the vinyl and…uh…I like it.

Yes indeed.

Other examples I can think of:
Stevie Wonder: “Jungle Fever”
The Bee Gees: “Saturday Night Fever”
The Kinks: “Percy”
Aimee Mann: “Magnolia”

and if you allow for artists that supplied soundtracks for their own movies,
Prince: “Purple Rain”
Paul McCartney: “Give My Regards To Broad Street”

Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants was also a soundtrack, but nobody saw the movie.

Prince also did the soundtrack to Graffiti Bridge, the sequel to Purple Rain. And Frank Zappa had two albums like that - Uncle Meat and 200 Motels.

Ugh, I forgot about the five-minute thing. I heard Duran Duran recorded the soundtrack for Gotcha Ya! (released in 1960) in Rio, and it only took them 20 minutes.

As someone who knows absolutely nothing about music, I’m going to take a wild shot in the dark and go for “Toto” doing the soundtrack for Dune.

Cue the electric guitar!

Ba da da dum!!!

I have the single from that movie, Graped by the Grapist b/w When Come Back, Bring Pie. It hit #15 on the Billboard charts, but Grapist was later covered by Hamburglar and the '20s-Style Death Rays.
