According to Revlon, it ranges from Light Ash Blonde to Dark Ash Blonde.
It’s basically a blonde that doesn’t have any red tones in it so it looks “cool” rather than"warm".
People who have any reddish hue to their hair and want to dye it blonde have to use an ash blonde to knock down the red. Otherwise, they get a really funky orangy tone to their hair. At least this is my understanding and experience.
YMMV
The opposite of ash blonde is honey or golden blonde. Ash = no red, honey = with red tones
Strawberry blonde = red tones coming out the wazoo.
Platinum blonde = whitish/silvery blonde.
Peroxide (or bottle) blonde = dyed blonde
Suicide blonde = self dyed (get it?) and looks it
Eggshell blonde = bald
Peace.
I wanted so much to have dark ash-blonde hair, and I went from colorist to colorist and always wound up with Bozo Orange. I finally found the only honest colorist in New York, who told me, “Honey, with your hair color, the only way you’re gonna get ash-blonde is to buy a wig, or bleach it out and re-color it till it turns into straw and falls out.”
I’m back to my natural dark brown.
Just for the heck of it, I’ll point out the ash refers to the pale colored wood of the ash tree, and not ashes of something burned.
