Lightening my hair. Any tips??

I have dirty blonde hair and I sometimes lighten it in the summer because I like the look.
Problem: Sometimes my hair gets a slight “reddish” tint to it. Is this due to leaving the product on too long or not long enough? It looks great when it comes out correctly but when it dosen’t work it’s a slight disaster being I work on a trading floor on Wall St. For whatever reason people seem to not trust red heads!!
Any tips out there??
Peace!!!

Here’s my two cents worth. GET THEE TO A HAIRDRESSER! Nothing looks cheaper or cheesier than a kitchen beautician haircoloring. Believe me, you can always tell a home job.

Thanks for your unwanted opinion!!

Does anyone who uses this board actually answer questions or is this the asshole everybody’s got one opinion board??
Unbelievable!!!

First, InLikeFlynn, it helps not to be astoundinly rude when looking for assistance. Second, lemonjuice and sunshine might lighten you up a little. The hair at least.

If you already have blonde hair, it’s much easier to DIY a bleach job or lightening.

Many dyes tend to give a yellowish look, which can worsen over time. I would recommend using an ash blonde colour to lighten, to avoid this. The ash tones generally go quite quickly, but the overall effect will stay less yellow. There are also violet-toning shampoos and conditioners that work well (often marketed for “silver” hair - ie grey - but can be great on bleached blonde too. Just do a strand test if you’re uncertain).

Yes - you can get a reddish effect from not leaving the dye on long enough. But it may also be that you naturally have some red in your hair, that isn’t always noticeable. If it wasn’t for your concerns about being a red head, I would recommend trying to deliberately go strawberry blonde, it’s such a lovely colour.

And one more tip I have is don’t bother working the dye down the rest of your hair, when you’re touching up the roots. There’s usually no need - if you’re already blonde and the colour change isn’t that dramatic, there shouldn’t be much of a “line”, and you will keep the ends of your hair in much better condition. Otherwise, if you touch the roots every month then work it down, the end part of your hair is getting 12-plus bleach jobs a year, and will end up like straw.

Thanks istara!
It’s great to have someone actually answer a question for a change.
As for ** “Iteki” , that’s what I’m trying to do is “lighten up”**, my hair!!
It’s unbelievably annoying to have to hear worthless opinions every time you ask a simple question.
This is not the IMHO.
That’s whats killing this board!!

This is also not the Pit! wonder9 was kind enough to give you a suggestion. Take it or leave it, but don’t be rude. You need to lighten up! (heh )

Iteki - How do you use lemonjuice? I’ve heard of people using it, but… do you just dump it on and comb it through? How much do you use?

Nate - in my experience, you need to sit in strong sunlight, and or use a HOT blowdryer, or even curling tongs. (None are nice methods for your hair, I might add). The lemon juice bleaches only a bit at first, but as with all bleached hair, it will continue to lighten further with continued sun exposure. It gives rather a yellowy look at first (I found).

For really natural sun-streaked hair, salt-sea is best, lots of swimming and surfing.

ACTUALLY AFTER LOKING BACK ON THE WHOLE SITUATION… i WAS OUT OF LINE AND i AM SORRY FOR THE DIS!
Just one of those bad days and venting in the wrong direction…
my bad… Im sorry “wonder9”!! peace???

Could the redness be what is often called “brassiness”?

I have seen bottles of stuff used to reduce the effects of brassiness at places such as Sally’s Beauty Supply.
