I should know this.
I have opened several wave files, or other audio/video files, and they open in Windows Media Player and play.
How do I save them for playing later?

Did you try right-clicking on the link to the wav file and choosing “Save Target As…”? I wasn’t quite sure in the OP but I am assuming you mean wav files you get from a link off a Web site.
…Or are they off the CD Rom?
Off web.
If right clicking, and ‘saving target as’, am I really going to be able to play the file off my PC in the future, or just creating a shortcut to the web?
If it’s a link directly to the audio file, then yes.
If they’re using some scripting to try to prevent you saving the file…then, I think I’m not allowed to tell you how to get it, because of the DMCA. (I know it doesn’t apply to me, but it does to the SDMB).
any kind of file that opens in media players.
I might have links to them saved, but I’m dependent on a web connection to listen or view them later.
I used to get an option "open file’ or ‘save file’, but they all just open in the media player. Seems I save the link per se, but not the file.
As I said, if the link you click on is direct to the file like http://www.foobar.com/mysounds.wav (just an example) then Save Target As… will save the file. If it’s a scripted link that redirects you to the audio, then Save Target As… will only give you a link.
If you’re not sure, why not put up the URL of the website you’re looking at, so we can see?

Rather than clicking on the link to öpen"the file, right click on the link and choose “save as”.
Aren`t these files in the temporary folder on the hard-drive?
Try to find the file by searching your hard drive. ???
alot os stuff ends up in temp folders, I have all the Ninjia episodes saved by going in an pulling them out to a permanent folder.
in winxp the path is
C:\Documents and Settings*Usernamehere*\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
you can save anything that you find in here, including your favorite flash animations.
just look for either .wav or .mp3 files and see if they are there.
Thanks.
‘Save target as’ was the way to go.
The temp file was a no brainer…just a real painer though.
