This works to our disadvantage as well, as demonstrated by my experience at the gas station today:
Not too long ago, I stopped at a station to fill up. After I inserted my card, the display on the pump went blank and the only thing it would let me do was ‘cancel’. Left the place in a bad mood and went to another station.
I stopped there again this evening after work, figuring surely they had their equipment fixed. Inserted my card, and…blank screen. Nothin’. But wait…the guy at the next pump just used a card. Why isn’t it taking my card? Hm. Why is the screen blank?
Waitaminit.
bend down a little bit
There at the very top of the screen it said “Please Enter Zip Code”. I couldn’t see it..because of the angle and overhang of the frame.
You have touched on this a bit earlier… my son is likely to top out around 6’3 or 4. Advice for parents of the tall or future tall? (I am 5’4 on a good day) He has inherited his fathers tall long lean frame, (father is not in the picture at all) at almost 8 years old he is still around 57 lbs and around 4.4. He is starting to need a kids size 10 in pants for length while some size 6 are still big in the waist. I keep telling him he needs to wear and love belts, I encourage him to wear them, and I usually let him buy a belt anytime we see one in a store that he likes. Without belts he walks around hitching up his pants all the time, and occasionally ends up with a pants around the ankles happening unintentionally.
He is born in December, so is youngest kid in the class, but the second tallest. In kindergarten the teachers expected more from him because both his height and his maturity lead them to believe he was older. (He is lagging behind in self care skills, like his jacket and boots… well he is still 3 for another month… 3? I thought he was almost 5!)
I am already thinking that my next car I buy in 3 years or so (I keep my cars around 10 years) might have to be a “bigger” car because if he hits his height around 14 he wont want to be eating his kneecaps in the the back seat. Right now his very thin body frame is more of a challenge than his height but I can see that changing… the buy formal wear in advance is well taken… thanks.
Most people that know me personally are surprised to find out my height, I just seem to carry myself in a way that does not scream “short person”. It helps that around here I would not be considered particularly short and my dad’s family is freakishly short, so for them I am “tallish”.
Same as us.
My husband doesn’t hide things from me because he doesn’t want to share, but because our daughter and I nag him about his drinking coke and eating “unapproved” snacks.
OK, my daughter makes most of the nagging. Nothing like a self-righteous 6 year old.
Do you have a problem with headgear, cycle/motorbike helmets and the like. My head looks like it’s in proportion to my body, but often I can’t get a hat to fit.
6’2" and surprisingly, it’s often hard for me to get a kilt long enough. It needs to go from about navel level to mid knee. Anything else is a skirt. The hire shops round here seem to cater for those shorter in the body, so they seem to stop at 24" when I’m really needing around a 26" length.
And I’m not tall enough to remember that I’m slightly tall, so I’ve battered my head a few times in older buildings.
Same here. I’ve had people tell me they didn’t believe me and make me stand up next to them to prove my height. They always follow that with “you don’t look like a short person.”
When I was in the Navy in a training assignment, there were two young guys in my group - one was 6’8", and the other was 6’10". They found it infinitely amusing to rest an elbow atop my 5’5" head and ask “Where’s FairyChatMom?” Ha ha so funny…
I did date a guy some years earlier who told me he was 5’15" - I thought that was adorable!! But I’ve found I’m much more comfortable around men closer to my own height. I feel like a little kid when a guy towers above me. At least, I used to. Now I just ignore everyone…
Oh yes! Hubby and his brother are the same height. Hubby sits. He’s considerate that way. Brother is spoiled, lazy and a little stupid. Oh, and he’s half blind too. When he comes to visit, the bathroom has to be cleaned with a fire hose. I once made him clean it, but he did a half-assed job and my MIL was mad at me for a week. It wasn’t worth the drama.
How is your posture? Do you have problems with counters, work stations, etc, being too low for you? How do you compensate?
Do you feel self-conscious with sitting in front of people in the movie theatre, sporting event, or other similar venue? Do you try to sit near the back to not block anyone’s view?
No problems with headgear…don’t remember my hat size (off the top of my head!) but it’s probably the larger side of ‘normal’.
Didn’t get into enough scraps to be presumed much of anything
Fantastic
The only time I sit down is at night, so I don’t have to turn the light on. Also used to when I was very drunk or hungover, neither had to do with being tall.
I keep Clorox wipes and cleaner in the cabinet over the toilet, to take care of any messy issues…which also has nothing to do with being tall
My posture is pretty good. When I was a late teenager it was horrible. I think I was slouching to avoid being so tall, actually. Yes, everything is too low. Fortunately by chance the counters in my kitchen are a little taller than normal, so preparing food isn’t too uncomfortable. Desks/workstations can be a problem, especially the ones with a keyboard tray.
I am aware of people sitting behind me, and at a movie I do find a seat with either an aisle behind me if it is going to be crowded at all. 'Course, you usually won’t catch me dead in a flick that’s going to be crowded.
blame my stupid way of wording questions. i would have asked how susceptible are you to falls and injuries compared with people with lower m (not to mention from a lower h from altitude 0?)
