Ask the nomadic Mormon teenager

So, I posted a rant in the BBQ Pit, and was duly proven wrong. So I learned a thing or two. Now its your turn! Ask away!

A little background:

I am almost 18.

I have been a Mormon since I can remember.

I have lived in Texas, California, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.

I have seen many places, cultures, and religions, and I stick to Mormonism.

I am heavy into music, computer work, and cars.

Heh, good luck.

Do you agree that Mormons generally have more kids than non-Mormons?

If so, why do they have so many kids??

I once asked this in General Questions, but no one could give a definative answer as to why.

Thanks.

Are you going on a mission?

How many girlfriends do you have?

An relation to Charles Willden?

How about that underwear? Got some?

Why do you use the term Mormon when the President of the Church has requested specifically that the term LDS be used? :stuck_out_tongue:

Assuming you are going on a mission, where exactly would you prefer to go? (Yes, I’m aware it doesn’t work that way)

Have you ever had anyone react negatively to the knowledge that you are LDS?

You said you’ve been LDS since you remember, does this mean your parents were LDS when you were born, converted while you where young, or something else?

How challenging do you find keeping the Word of Wisdom? Any particular part that’s particularly challenging? (And you might want to inform those not in the know what the Word of Wisdom is).

I don’t know enough about the region I will admit that…

but here is the thing that pissed me off…
I was watching MTV and they did one of those true life stories about a family who basically kicked thier son out of the family because he was gay…

and the kid even went to a doctor who gave him shock therapy to not be gay…

I don’t understand how any religion would support such a thing…

so whats the deal??

I think that they do, on average, have more kids than others. But by the same token, I know many LDS families that do not have many kids. I think it all comes down to a commandment given to “multiply and replenish the earth”.

As I have eluded in several posts over the past couple of months, it is my full intention to serve a full time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. My father served two years in the East Los Angeles mission in the 70’s, in a Spanish speaking area. He has told me, and I have seen evidence that every good thing my family has has stemmed from his mission.

Sadly, as written here, the LDS church no longer practices polygamy.

I am not sure as to who Charles Willden is, so probably not. As for the whole underwear thing, I do not have any. The reason for that lies in the reasoning behind the “undergarments”. They are not just a certain kind that is worn for the hey of it, but actually they serve a purpose. Typically, one does not recieve them until they have reached a certain point in their spiritual progression.

I used the term cause I am still used to it.

Well, I would like to go somewhere out of the US. Somewhere where I can learn not only a new language, but new things about a culture or two.

Negative reaction is something that occurs from time to time. A while past, there was a girl that I was very interested in, and the feelings were reciprocated. We went out on a date, and she and I got to talking about religion. As soon as the word “Mormon” came out of my mouth, she got this panicked look on her face. We never went out again, so I guess that counts.:frowning:

My mother and my father were LDS when I was born. Yet, their parents were fairly inactive and not very serious about religion. All of the examples I have seen of a good LDS family and marriage stem from my own parents.

The Word of Wisdom is a statement that talks about not using tobacco, alcohol, and other forms of stimulants and things that alter the body…

As for having trouble with it, I have from time to time. Nothing serious. For instance, I have never drank coffee, tea, or any alcohol. Never have I smoked tobacco, or any illegal substance. The part where I said that I have had trouble is that I have had many an opportunity, and the decision can become difficult when put right in your face.

Merge, the issue of homosexuality has always been touchy. Either way, if one takes a stance, he’ll get blasted by the other side. As a member of the LDS church, I believe that homosexuality is nothing more than sexual immorality. It is not ordained of God. There was no Adam and Bob, or Eve and Linda, if I recall.

There was also no adam, eve and Chris Burke…
does that mean that you should ostracize anyone who has a mental retardation??

Does your church believe that God loves everyone unconditionaly?

Are you one of those guys I see on a bike with a backpack and helmet, also wearing a tie? That cracks me up.
PS - Be careful in northwest Arkansas. I’m sure you know why.

Was that you who rang my doorbell the other day?

For the issue of mental retardation, it is an interesting concept. At first I didn’t know what to think, but it makes a lot of sense to me. The basic premise is that many individuals that are mentally retarded do not have a full capacity to make right v. wrong decisions. That sort of discernment is not always something they are capable of. We believe that the major purpose of being on Earth is to learn to make right choices, and to live a good life based on choosing good over evil, so we can return to heaven. The ultimate goal is to return to heaven. If someone who is mentally incapable of making right v. wrong choices, we believe that they are going to heaven. It’s a sealed deal for them, becuase they are not capable of making that choice of right v. wrong.

As for your other question, let me address it in this manner. I do not know if you are a parent, but let us assume you are. You have two children. One is a very good, upstanding individual, whom you are very proud of. The other is somewhat more of a black sheep; doesn’t make choices you like, and overall, you aren’t too proud of him. Do you love one over the other? I think that Heavenly Father loves us all equally, no matter the decisions we make.

Yup, missionaries are the guys that sometimes are riding bikes in semi-formalwear. I agree it is a little funny, but cars don’t come cheap. Although there are many parts where they are now given cars to drive.

Skelji, give me about a year, and I might be able to say yes.

unless you are gay?
I am sorry, I am not trying to say anything bad about your beliefs… like I said, I don’t know enough about the religion.

The show on t.v. upset me that the family would kick out the son because they had to because of their religion.
You also said “return to heaven”

do you believe in reincarnation?

The stance of the LDs church is that Homosexuality is a metal condition and thus curable and practicing such is a choice.

Those with mental retardation (depending on the level) are considered innocent and untainted by the evils of the world and as such are accepted into heaven automatically, same thing with children under 8 years of age, innocence gets you a free pass so to speak.

Yes, he does love everyone unconditionally as does his son Jesus Christ, loving one unconditionally does not mean one must condone sin however, and practicing homosexuality is a sin as far as the LDS church is concerned. Note the use of the word practicing, being homosexual is not a sin, acting on it is.

Sorry for stealing hijacking your thread Stccrd, I couldn’t help myself.

Well, how about that?

No problem Dravin, thanks for the insight. Many
times others are much more capable of saying things that I cannot.

Northwest Arkansas…nothing rings a bell. As a matter of fact, I know a family in my congregation who is moving there in two months. I also know a current resident…
