I’m a big fan of The Detroit Derby Girls, who will be skating at WFTDA Nationals in Philly next month. Because the movie “Whip It” was filmed in Detroit, a few of the girls are in the movie.
I wanted to join a few years ago when they were firsts starting the league, but between meetings and practice you need about 20 hours per week to dedicate to the team. Does your league require the same kind of time commitment?
Rollercon is a mix of business and pleasure. There are workshops and classes for skaters and refs. There are challenge bouts which are for fun games made up of ad hoc teams, sometimes co-ed. Like last year there was the Star Wars vs Star Trek bout and the Vagine Regime vs the Strickly Dickly (gay vs straight). There is usually one WFTDA sanctrioned bout. There’s the Black and Blue Ball which is our ‘formal’.
At night insane Rollergrils take over the Imperial Palace and run amok.
OCRG are a great group of girls. I’ve reffed for them a handful of times. They recently dropped WFTDA status because I believe they weren’t interested in playing competitively and wanted to be more focused on being a recreational league. Several of the LADD (Los Angeles Derby Dolls) referees do double duty with OCRG.
With league and team. Some Leagues can only really field one team’s worth of skaters. Also, even if a league can support multiple teams and their travel team may even have its own name, people are going to refer to the travel team as the league name. So it becomes a singular reference. For instance I believe the Oly Rollers travel team is the La Cosa Nostra Donnas, but if they are coming to play you, you’d almost assuredly refer to them as “Oly”.
