It’s the time of year when I get to eat fresh asparagus! But this year, I’m breastfeeding my infant. Which leads me to the following question:
We all know about asparagus and urine. But my question is: does eating asparagus make my breastmilk smell and/or taste funny?
The follow-up question is: if no one knows the answer and I need to do a scientific experiment to find out, how long after ingesting asparagus should I pump?
Thank you.
Whatever you eat changes the flavor of the milk you produce. The baby is used to it, however, and usually actually enjoys the variation in the flavor. So don’t avoid the asparagus unless the kid actually reacts poorly to it (allergic and/or rejects the flavor).

Asparagus fan and breastfeeding mom here, my rugrat is 21 months. I never noticed a difference in the way my milk smells or tastes but then I don’t taste it all that often.
I think your real concern is probably whether your baby will not like the flavor…the only way to find out is to nurse after eating asparagus. Your baby might reject it because of the strong flavor, but might not. Mine never has seemed to mind.
