Assinine Mass Corporate E-Mails

So, someone, somewhere in my company decided to update a database and needed to collect information. Easiest way to do that is to send out a company wide e-mail asking the questions they needed answered. They specifically stated that if the e-mail did not pertain to you to please ignore. So a few people answered him but instead of just replying to him the hit the “Respond To All”, making their response a mass e-mail. The following is a a portion of what I am getting in my inbox at work today, names have been changed to protect the innocent:

I just wanted to let you folks know that I have been getting all of these emails that I am guessing are supposed to be going to Mickey Mouse.
I wanted you to be aware that they are coming to me, though I am not in the distribution list. You may want to check with Mickey to see if she is receiving what you are trying to send her.

This morning, A communication was sent to Any Company USA about updates to the Travel Database.

Please do not use Reply to All to reply to the Travel Database message. You are adding unnecessary server traffic.

Please only reply to the one person sending the message.

In between we also got a few e-mails from the Notes administrator to knock this off but people still keep replying to them. Its a wonder this company hasn’t been run into the ground yet. Did I mention we are a technology company?

Holy crap, is that unreal or what? That’s the kind of stuff that made me want to go postal at my last Network Admin job. People (most) are completely incapable of following simple instructions, in my experience. It’s unbelievable how many people will do the very thing you ask them not to immediately after you ask them to stop. It’s enough to make you crazy.

Sounds like a couple of allegedly “professional” listserves I subscribe to. Full of complete dumbasses who hit the “reply to all” button when they are attempting to communicate by private email with each other. Then they “reply to all” to apologize. Then they do it again. Then they “reply to all” to apologize. Then…AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGHHHHHHHHHH!!!

I told this (slightly related) story in another thread last summer, but I’ll tell it again here:

The office supply company whose salesperson called me four times in three days regarding the computer quote she was preparing for me, when I had given explicit and emphatic instructions that she was not to call me. She had my fax, e-mail, and snail-mail contact info and never used them. When I told her on the fourth call that I would not be buying my computer from her, and why (namely, she clearly wasn’t listening to me and couldn’t follow simple instructions), she yelled, “What kind of salesperson would I be if I didn’t call to follow up?” and HUNG UP ON ME. The kicker? The company’s name is Office TECHNOLOGY. Guess all they have are telephones . . .

Dear lord…this is almost verbatim to a series of messages that I saved from June of 1999. (I just have to keep this stuff that people don’t believe).

A message was sent out to inform people that the email server would be down for 10 minutes at 6PM. 8 emails went out to everyone asking why they were getting it and to be removed from the list, then 4 emails to everyone (from users) explaining why they were getting them and to stop doing it, then one from the manager of the email system clarifying

Please do not reforward or reply to this message!

You are all on a distribution list (i.e. server1 and server2) advising of a Outlook outage this evening at 6pm. By replying to the distribution list you are repropagating this note on the server, thus flooding the server and network. This potentially could cause a complete network outage. Please do not resend this note.

Please call me if you have any questions.

, then 7 more emails wanting to stop getting emails sent to everyone, then a final email from a fed up user saying

Everybody just chill out, this message is for our information. Just delete it.

I then sent a note to the email admin (who I knew) saying that my email was down and I can’t send email…

she wasn’t impressed…
