ASVAB scores

Age 79. All arithmetic calculations done in my head, Most mechanical/automotive answers were wild guesses. Started getting impatient when I saws how long it was taking, I had no idea hoe long it would go on.

End of quiz…

When I took the real one in January 1980, one of the sections was called attention to detail. Each question consisted of a line of letters, either “c” or “o” (mostly “o”, with a few “c” here and there. Like this:

oooooooocooooooooocccoooooooooooocccooocccooocccooooooooooooooo

My task for each question was to report how many were “c”.

Only section I got less than 90 on. I was surprised (and relieved) that this set didn’t include such a section.

My recruiter told me that with my overall score, I could choose which “A” school I wanted in the Nuclear Power program. Electronics Technician had the longest “A” school before going to Orlando (26 weeks, plus BE&E), so I picked that.

I did qualify with a expert on the M-16, a feat for me since I had never shot any weapon before!

I was a helicopter mechanic in the army

I dont remember ever taking this test back then.

PS: I took the test again and got a worse score and my cousin helped me with the mechanical/automotive stuff! I did do a lot better on the math stuff.

OG! I remember the oooooocooooooocooocccoooooo section!

I have my ASVAB results here in my hand. I don’t know why I saved this piece of paper.

I took the real ASVAB on October 20, 1981. There wasn’t an overall score. Our ASVAB was divided into six areas of aptitude. The results were given as a percentage of how you compared to others in your grade, also how you compared to others of your sex in your grade. Again, there is no overall score on my test.

There is also a section that shows the raw data----how many correct answers were possible vs. how many you got correct.

The test was clearly sexist. Because when I was compared to others at my grade level my scores were higher than when compared to only boys at my grade level. Boys aren’t smarter than girls. But a test developed by boys is going to be easier for boys than girls. I don’t know the sex of the test developers, but I can guess.

Here are the aptitudes: Verbal, Math, Perceptual Speed, Mechanical, Trade Technical, and Academic Ability.

My percentile scores by grade were: 93,96,25,93,93,96
My percentile scores by grade/sex were: 91,95,32,88,86,96

I have to let that sink in. This test implies that males have BETTER verbal skills than females. My verbal score went down when compared to males only. Well at least my fellow males have difficulty picking out “c” from “o” in a string of these letters.

Below are the careers the ASVAB has deemed appropriate for people who excel in the 6 aptitudes.

Verbal: Air traffic control, copy writer, journalist, information clerk, public relations, librarian, et. al.

Math: Computer operator, data processing, inventory clerk, operations specialist, finance specialist, air cargo specialist, surveyor, comm. tech., et. al.

Perceptual Speed: (Ladies excel (I wish there were sarcastic emoji)) Administrative spec, clerk-typist, court recorder, file clerk, disbursing clerk, legal clerk, stock control, supply clerk (Basically ladies get to be secretaries)

Mechanical: Aircraft sheetmetal, fire control tech, drill press operator, aircraft maintenance, et. al.

Trade Technical: Aircraft Hydraulic repair, auto mechanic, power plant, engine equip repair, jet engine mechanic

Academic ability: Law enforcement spec., Inventory management, security spec., dental tech., personnel management spec.

We’ve come along way in 37 years, right?

Just saw this meme on Facebook and figured it was worth sharing/trying to share here.
