In a 5 minute period, my HDD controller on my laptop (my main computer) died and my cell phone screen broke, rendering it useless.
Of course, all my cell phone contacts were backed up to my laptop.
Of course, all my laptop contacts are backed up on my cell phone.
Of course, the last non-cell/laptop backup I made was 3-1-2014. (I backed up the laptop to our NAS serverboxthing, after I backed up the cell phone to the laptop. [MarvAlpert]YES![/MarvAlpert]
Of course the server settings at work have all incoming and outgoing emails deleted from server once it’s pulled/pushed/whatever to the end user. (And, yes, I’m the dumbass who set it up that way, so I can’t blame anybody but myself.)
If the hard drive controller card is bad, you might be able to save the drive if you can find an IDENTICAL controller card on a good drive, unscrew the failed card, and replace with the donor card, unless the drive mechanism (platters and/or heads) is damaged, the data is still most likely there, a controller swap may get them readable again
Somebody else can - I’m on good terms with a computer repair company and he’s working on it while we speak.
I’m not too worried about all this, it just struck me as particularly hateful on the Universe’s part that both of these things occurred within a 5 minute stretch.
I actually got my phone back. The thing is so old, the guy at the Sprint store said “yeah, we got these in the back. A brand new one is $80.” Since I’m an old fart and like the manual keyboard and can’t stand screen keyboards, I took him up on it.
Naw, the HDD controller broke as I was banging the cellphone against the counter. Details like this matter.
Seriously, dropped the phone and the computer decided to go piss-up about 5+ minutes later, as I was searching for possible solutions to the stupid phone.
OTOH, found out the HD is toast. No data, nothing. Not good.
All right, found out my last backup was 4-4-14, so not too bad. Did completely lose the MapPoint file I created, but compared to what could have been lost… I’ll take it.
(Yes, I was out of the office today, which is why I’m finding out about this now. OTOH, made $5k in sales, so not the worst day ever.)
