So there’s this little rat dog, a Chi… however you spell it, who has developed the habit of escaping his yard. The first time I saw him loose, I tried to catch him because of the snow depth and the cold, but he wouldn’t come near me. At least 4 times since then he has shown up while I was walking my dog and I used my dog to lure the l.r.d. back to his yard and waited until his owner came out to get him. (L.r.d. is usually confined by an invisible fence. It isn’t working and while the l.r.d. will leave the yard on his own he will not go back into it unless his mommy carries him.)
Today the damn thing was actually scratching at my door. It was dark, no way was I going to try walking with a black dog in the dark even though my dog and I have reflective gear. So I again used my long suffering dog to lure the l.r.d. into my house, closed the door, and called the owner. L.r.d. and my dog are ok together, more’s the pity.
Owner came, eventually, and here is the beyond stupid moment. The little rat dog was lying down to my side and I went to pick him up.:smack: Totally unthinking. Just stupid. And the l.r.d. launched himself at my face. Again, I know better. I mean I really do know better. I guess because I’d been watching him play with my wondermutt for about half an hour I forgot what a little shit he is.
It’s not a big bite, didn’t warrant a trip to the ER, but I’ll have it checked tomorrow.
I’m sorry l.r.d. is so screwed up and has such shitty owners, but I’ve done all I feel obligated to do. They lose their dog, it’s their own fault.
I hate those invisible fences, they do nothing to protect your dog. Another dog can get in,fight your dog through the fence, then the poor doggie can’t get back in the yard… To say nothing about coyotes,Bobcats,Puma,Racoon
I had a boss who owned a birddog & an invisible fence. He was regularly bitching about how he had to go chase his dog down yet again. Pooch would see a squirrel, get all worked up & just blow right thru the fence chasing it. However, once it gave up & came back towards home, it wouldn’t cross the fence to come into his yard because it would get shocked again.
I wonder if that’s what’s happening with your neighbor’s punt*.
‘Punt’ because this is the action that one should take with a l.r.d.
It sounds like the dog has issues which have probably been magnified by being owned by a Really Bad owner. The dog may be crazy but it seems like it would endure massive electric shocks Just To Get Away from its bad owner. I’d argue that this proves its sane.
Sorry the dog bit the OP; not sure how that happened if the OP didn’t say, treat or act like the dog was a disliked little rat. Might just be resentment at any human for years of mistreatment and reinforced acceptance of bad behavior.
I have a chihuahua, he is well treated to the point of being slighty spoiled but if any stranger touches him without going through a little ritual first he will bite almost 100% of the time. Usually his bites are not full bites and don’t break the skin. If he is laying next to my So and I try to pet his head he will bite my hand however I can reach over and pick him up without a prooblem. I think Rat dogs are just nippers by nature.
MY favorite part about this OP is he couldn’t even be bothered to find out how to spell the breed name. But yeah, fuck that little ankle piranha and its owners.
Well, oops on spelling out the dog’s breed. When I think of the l.r.d. I come up with some surprising names for his ancestry.
I went to pick him up because he slithered away from his daddy towards me. They most definitely don’t like each other.
I’m sad that the l.r.d. was abused and that his rescuers weren’t really equipped for his rehabilitation. It’s a no-win situation.
I’m headed out to the dr. just to be safe. The owners are a bit upset that I called for vet and rabies information. Maybe that’ll be enough of a scare to get them to contain the l.r.d.
I’d be really tempted to take Little Rat Dog to the pound and let his owners pay the price to get him out again. Maybe they’d get serious about being dog owners after that.
I agree that electric fence is good when it works; bad when it doesn’t. I even agree with taking the dog to the pound to make a point, but I have to live here.
Both of this neighbor’s dogs are rescues, and I applaud that. The other dog is very wary of humans, too. I think the little Chihuahua is broken beyond fixing. I have no idea what the initial abuse was, other than it involved children and who knows what else.
My lip is still swollen, but healing. A week of antibiotics and then all should be well.
I saw the two adult GSDs running loose today. Oh, joy.
This. Catching it and simply giving it back is awfully convenient for the owner. Making them pay something to get their dog back will encourage them to either do better at containing him in their yard, or force them to give it up. The latter may seem cruel if the dog ends up getting euthanized, but it’s a better option than letting it slowly freeze to death in the snow.
Ratdog is nippy 'cause that’s who he is,no "abuse"needed. There are 3 here… 1 is a lovely tempered female,a bit yappy,1 is an entire male, very well trained, and one is everything bad about a Ratdog. If he weighed a pound more he’d be dangerous … His owner thinks his behavior is “cute/protecting her” Good thing Ratdog isn’t mine!
I don’t at all disagree with what you’ve posted. The problem with this little rat dog is that no one but his mommy can catch him if he is loose. His daddy can catch him by backing l.r.d. into a corner. The minute I closed the door behind l.r.d. I thought oh, great, I’ve got a dog I can’t catch loose in my house.
I’m not thrilled about having been bit, but I expect there’s been some fence repair done. Nothing like the fear of losing one’s dog or being fined or having to pay another’s medical bill to bring out the inner carpenter in one.
I don’t understand the appeal of little Ratdogs, but everybody has a favorite breed. This dog has been abused, tho, and that I believe is the reason he can’t be caught without a net or a dart gun.
We’ve to to deal with the “under 20lb” rule, which may change and the “no dog that may appear dangerous” rule… Me,I want my GSD back,or my Dobie,or the English Bull mix… Everything 20lb and under is something fluffy, white or hyper.
Yeah, it’s one thing to have a small dog by choice; another to be forced into getting one. My wondermutt is just about 20 lbs, white and fuzzy, but at least in part due to age, a couch potato. My beloved Scottie was a love bug. She completely skipped the puppy class about Scotties being aloof. All my other dogs were big white shag carpets, and I loved them, but they were farm dogs, very independent thinkers who couldn’t understand why us puny humans wanted them to do stuff that was totally unnecessary to their work. I could have smeared myself with bacon fat and doused myself with kibble bits and my Kuvasz would have stayed put because (a) it wasn’t mealtime; and (b) whatever I had planned, she wasn’t interested.
GusNSpot Bit of St. Bernard in Zeus? He’s gorgeous. My Pyr was all white, wouldn’t walk on anything but the ground, and had to be pushed down the corridor of the vet’s office. Took two people. The vet finally decided to treat him at the back door. The cat slept on top of him; the mama goats left their babies with him; even the airhead sheep followed him anywhere.
Great guy, but the drool could’ve filled a small pond.
