Atheists: another question please.

A looooooooooong time ago I asked if commercials that had a “God” slant to them would offend you. By “God” slant I was more refering to a “Christian” slant.
I came away with the impression that a certain amount of people, and/or atheists were somewhat turned off by any company that presented itself as Christian.

Recently TV time started a thread about how yummy
Hebrew National hot dogs are.

I have seen advertisements for
Hebrew National. One of their slogans is “We answer to a higher authority”. The television commercials make it clear that the “higher authority” is, in fact, God:eek:. Hebrew National, of course, is a Jewish company, not Christian.

So what I’d like to know is, as an atheist are you also turned off by Hebrew Nationals claims as you are by companies claiming to be Christian? If not, why not? It would be fantastic if the same dopers who responded to my first thread would respond to this one!

I just think it’s a cute little joke. And by the way, Hebrew National are the ONLY hotdogs I will buy!

Well, I think it’s hilarious when an omnipotent being is reduced to a another servant of the Almighty Dollar. Puts religion in the right perspective, IMHO.

It’s funny. Not offensive.

If a Christian company advertised a product with similar humour, that’d be funny too.

It’s self-righteousness that irks.

jjimm nailed it; humor is fine, but self-righeousness and pandering turns me off.

Naaw, i reckon it’s cool. If they had Jesus hot dogs, I’d like those too.

It only gets a problem when busineses get all sanctimonius about their beliefs.

Wow! I would SO buy Jesus Hot Dogs!!

A slightly different take on it is that Kosher processing really does make a quality difference in the final product.

The reason that most “Christian” commercials tick me off is that most of them are a scam and are using “Christianity” as a selling device for “spiritual enlightenment” or “Dr. So-and-so’s book and tape set on how to use the Bible to overcome crab grass”, etc. I see these as nothing more than contemptable attempt to seperate the dim and/or grey haired from their money using the lure of “salvation” to hook the suckers.

As jjimm and Revtim and gex gex said, it’s the self-righteous holier-than-thou crap that annoys me.

That said, not much really offends me, as everyone has a right to their own opinion.

BTW, I love Hebrew National hot dogs!

Yum… I wouldn’t mind nibbling on Jesus’ wiener… mmmm…

Anyway, I’ve never even heard of Hebrew Nationals before this thread, but for the record, I agree with mazirian wholeheartedly.

.:Nichol:.

Since Hebrew National does follow Kosher processing law they have a legitmate claim to use religion to sell their product, since a kosher product comes with a certian gaurantee of quality and purity. That and their slogan is pretty tounge in cheek. As far as I know Christian dogma has nothing similar with regards to product quality, so seeing an advertisment for Jesus-brand garden shears is just plain offensive and stupid.

However, like others have said, if I saw something advertised as a Christian product in a very humorous manner I’d buy it just for kicks. Sample product slogans I’d go for:

“Jesus Dogs: He died for your sausage!”

“Corpus Christi Burgers: Ritual Cannabilism never tasted so good!”

“Holy Moly Vineyards: Turning water into wine right here in the Napa Valley since 1974”

“Discover the real reason the apostles followed Jesus through the desert, His awesome breakfast burritos! Now available McJesus for a limited time only!”

neither type of ad would offend me, but as others have said, self-righteousness in general doesn’t appeal to me. Those Hebrew National commercials don’t seem self-righteous though.

“Crazy Murray Groen’s Bris Planning & Mohel Service: You can’t spell ‘ritual genital mutilation’ without G-R-O-E-N!”
