I’m not sure if that’s the correct term for it, but I’m talking about the move that The Rock does when he’s lying on his back and then sort of curls up his legs and kicks them out and jumps to a standing position. I’ve seen the same move done in various martial arts movies as well. How hard is it for someone to learn to do this?
as i remember from the long ago days of gymnastics… it is a quick snap of the legs and a quick push from the arms. they have to be done at the same time.
i learned it on the bars rather quickly, with in a day, about 2 hours total until i could do it every time i tried. on the beam it took a few days. i never got it consistantly off the floor.
if you want to learn it, find someone who knows how to do it demonstrate it and talk you through it. you need someone to talk you through it, so you don’t keep practicing the wrong move over and over. then practice, practice, practice.
It’s called a kip up. Google on that and there’s lot’s of info, including instructions.
Not terribly hard to do for an athletic person; natuarly being younger makes it easier. Easiest to do if you have an average to light build; 250+lb guys have a lot of weight to move… large pro athletes like The Rock, Booker T et al are obvious exceptions.
Having someone show you is best, but it’s still pretty simple to learn on your own - you do it the way it looks like you would (no unseen technique)… at least not when I taught myself to do it as a kid - with no hands from the ground yet. Watch smacking the back of your head on the ground since sometimes you will not quite have enough spring to get your weight over your feet and will fall backwards agin. Start on the grass or a mat; any surface harder than those and you will hurt your tailbone and/or head.
Ahh, a “kip up”…thanks! And thanks for the responses so far. I am one of those 250 lb. guys that was mentioned, but I’m becoming increasingly athletic and gradually dropping weight as well. I’m hoping I can eventually do a kip up; I’ve always just thought that they were neat.
