This summer, I’m working in Atlanta and trying to live on the cheap. I need recommendations for Indian/Asian/Whateverian stores that have cheap, cheap food. I know of Trader Joe’s, but that is it.
I don’t know what part of Atlanta you’ll be in, but I shop at the Farmer’s Market a few blocks north of where 85 intersects 285. If you take MARTA, you can walk the half-mile to it from the Doraville station.
If you’re looking for Asian markets, take a ride up Buford Highway.
Here are a few. Hong Kong Supermarket has a very nice selection.
A brother-in-law owns/runs an Indo-Pak store in Gwinnett; what are you looking for in particular?
Cheap food. I’m not really a picky eater and I’ve found the ethnic grocery stores are almost always cheaper than “name brand” counterparts. They don’t advertise etc, so it is cheaper with spices, staples, canned goods, meats, whatever. Plus, tasty things to try.
Depending on where you will be, I second cruising up Buford Highway. There are people of nearly every culture and nationality who have set up shop in that area.
On Jimmy Carter Boulevard about half a mile east of I-85, there are at least two large farmer’s market type stores, and multitudes of smaller shops. My favorite is the International Farmer’s Market, in the same shopping center as the Office Depot. Used to be a Cub Foods. They have imported foods from China, Japan, India, Pakistan, Korea, Mexico, and other places, arranged by locality. There is also a large fresh produce section, dry and bulk foods such as beans, rice, spices, etc., meat, dairy, bakery… They have everything, and I can quite literally pick up food for a month on $100 from there.
That’s really all I have, being an East-sider. You can find international foods nearly anywhere in the Atlanta area now, though.
Where? And do they sell Branston pickle? Yeah, I know that’s not Indian but Indian stores quite often stock English food.
The largest Indo-Pak store in that area is Al-Madina, corner of Jimmy Carter and Steve Reynolds, behind U-Haul. My brother-in-law’s shop is on Indian Trail, but not nearly as large. As others have said, try the International Farmer’s Market across the street, or the quite large Super-H on Pleasant Hill (near Wal-mart) for far-Asian food.
Thanks - I’ve been to Super-H and the IFM on Shackleford/Steve Reynolds. They are good for east Asian stuff, but not for English food. I get Indian food from an Indo-Pak store at Oak Road in Lilburn/Lawrenceville, but they have stopped carrying Branston pickle (which I can get from A Taste of Britain in Norcross, but I am hoping for somewhere nearer to where I live - further east in Gwinnett).
