Good Asian markets/stores in Baltimore/DC area?

My SO and i are about to return to Baltimore after another excellent trip to her home town of San Francisco. One thing that i love about visiting the Bay Area is the abundance of excellent Asian grocery stores. The other night, we were at a big place on Clement Street that had a wide variety of Asian groceries, from Japanese candy to Chinese fake meat to Indonesian peanut sauce concentrate.

I’ve been in Baltimore for a few years now, and have never really found anything comparable. There is a small place called Asia Foods on York Road just outside the Baltimore City line, and i go there reasonably often, but its selection is nowhere near as good as the California stores. I am now casting my eye further afield, and am wondering if any Dopers can recommend a really good Asian grocery and supply store in the Baltimore and DC area. If i have to travel across the Potomac to NoVa, i’ll do that too.

Asian grocery stores are all over the Baltimore-Washington area. Check out this link:

This lists a whole lot of them under District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. I’m afraid I can’t tell you how good they are though.

Thanks for the list, Wendell. It looks like there’s quite a few options out there.

There’s a pretty decent one at the intersection of Rte 40 and Rte 29. I think it’s called Lotte Plaza or something. Full grocery store sized and lotsa fresh goodies. I recommend it, but have very little to compare it to.

HanAhReum is a Korean grocery store chain which has a store in the Baltimore Area. I should qualify that I don’t know if they exist in Korea, but they have quite a few stores around here.

The same company runs a store called Super H, which is pretty impressive. My wife and I shop there regularly for the produce which is high quality and low price. It might be a bit far from Baltimore.

If what you are looking for is a Chinese grocery, perhaps this list can help.

Rockville Pike in Rockvile, Md has quite a few Asian groceries and some well recommended Chinese restaurants, so you might find what you are looking for there.

Take the beltway to Rt. 40 west, about a mile or so on the left, at the corner of 40 and Rolling Rd is a big Asian market, although I forget it’s exact name. It should be exactly what you’re looking for, and a lot closer than the DC subs.

It’s HAR (Han Ah Reum), Weirddave, and I second that suggestion.

It’s a lot of fun, mhendo. You’ll love it.

Thanks for all the info, folks.

It looks like my next trip will be to Han Ah Reum, in Catonsville.

Well, we just got back from our trip out to Han Ah Reum, and it was everything we were hoping for. Excellent range of stuff from a whole variety of Asian countries, and good fresh produce at very reasonable prices.

This looks like being top of our list for regular excursions from now on.

Thanks again for the help.

Welcome back and congratulations!
