You see, my mother lived in England until 1970. Back then, they had a system like our(US) Social Security. They gave you a national health number instead of a social security number.
Anyway, she can get a pension from a job she had over there for 6 years if she can find this number. Unfortunately, it seems the UK isn’t as user-friendly as the US when it comes to making these numbers available.
Is there a way over the internet or phone she could get this important number? Is it still called a national health number? Any info. you can provide would be appreciated.
You don’t need her National Health number (which only entitles you to health care and dental care free at the point of delivery) but her National Insurance Number (which gives access to social security and work related benefits including pensions,
The National Health number used to have the form ABCD123, it has now been updated to an all numeric format.
The National Insurance Number has the for AB 12 34 56 C. This is what you are looking for.
If you write or e-mail the Department of Social Security:
with your mother’s date of birth, they would be able to supply it.
Don’t count on the amount of the pension being large. IIRC UK pensions are not index linked for people who have left the country. Unlike US social security- my mother still gets $150 a month for three year’s contributions in the 1960s.
