My grandmother used to make diorama egg ornaments very much like the one pictured here.
She made them for Christmas and easter. She used crosses and angels and tiny mangers with appropriately tiny baby Jesuses. These items came 5 or 6 in a carded cellophane bag for under a dollar.
Since my budget for gifts has all but dried up I thought the nostalgia route might make some people smile.
I haven’t had any luck finding a source for appropriate plastic “doo dads”. I want the ones I make to be similar to hers. I don’t want anything too refined looking, or more modern.
Do any of you know where I might find these things? I’ve tried searching miniatures and there are things that would make nice ornaments, but spending $15 for the materials for one wouldn’t solve my budget problem.
I can’t see the photo so I’m not sure what scale you’re looking for, but I noticed at Hobby Lobby near the dollhouse items they sell bags of tiny decorations. I don’t remember the cost, though, probably a couple of dollars.
Try going to a well-stocked cake supply store. They would have drawers full of little cupcake-topper sized figures, and likely have holiday-specific stuff already. The one I go to has them for about 25 cents apiece.
Hobby Lobby and/or Michaels would be my first stops
We don’t have Hobby Lobby locally but I’ve looked in Michael’s and JoAnn’s. There are some fall back possibilities, but until it gets too close to the deadline I’d like to keep looking for something closer to the style that Gran used.
Somewhere online someone is trying to unload his grandmother’s attic and there’s a shoebox of these things.
Since posting I’ve been trying to figure out what other crafts people might have used these things for. Model railroad people aren’t quite right, but are another possibility. There can’t have been enough people making diorama egg ornaments to support an entire plastic thingamabob industry.
This is a promising lead I wouldn’t have thought of. Thanks!
