I feel for you jjimm, the fee is definitely a deterrent. THE STRAIGHT DOPE: fighting ignorance since 1973 (only 14.95). I’ve bought Cecil’s books, and other materialistic crap from the straight dope(notice the absence of capitalization), and while TSDMB isn’t technically affiliated with the SD, I will not waste any more of my money. Hey at least Ed Zotti will get his bonus. I’m sure you moderators and other miniscule administrators won’t see a dime. $14.95 X let’s say 4000 existing members next year = 60,000(also notice I didn’t write 59,800, because that would have made it look a whole lot less than $60,000 
). I can’t fathom it costing $60,000 dollars to run a message board. Hey maybe you think you deserve money for all of the time you(board janitors a.k.a mods and admins) spend keeping this board clean, and some of you do, but jeez. I think I’ll read books from now on, much cheaper than this buy-friends-online! crap. And I don’t want to hear how I’m wrong, or how this venture is justified. I hope the powers-that-unfortunately-be don’t ban me!

You might get through the first few days by filling up your diary with social events, doing all the things you always meant to do but never quite found the time…
But soon after, in a moment of weakness, you’ll think: “I’ll just have a quick look at what’s going on in the SD… I’m not going to post - just take a look, I can handle it…”
This works for the first few times until you see a post that you simply have to answer.
As you phone your credit card details through, you realise:
‘The Straight Dope’… you can check out, but you can never leave…

I know what you mean about stepping back, though. I’ve done it a few times too, not for any specific cause, just to whack my time and energy back into balance.
