On the net I’ve seen many websites that cover all forms of childhood nostalgia. You can find everything you ever wanted to know about the toys, books, video games, TV series, movies and breakfast cereals of your childhood. However, on the English-speaking web one medium that was a part of every child’s life in Germany from the seventies onwards seems strangely absent:
Audio dramas for children. I was born in 1980 and I don’t know a single German child who didn’t own dozens of those on cassette (or lately on those newfangled CDs.)
Typically they weren’t audio books read by a single speaker but dramas with full cast of voice actors, sound effects etc. , mostly in long-running series. Some were original creations, some were based on series of books (The three Investigators, Famous Five…) and others were adapted from TV series.
To what extend did those exist in the US or elsewhere?
