Auguries of Sweltering (monthly mini-rants)

I must be the only one repelled by all the trumpy threads, from the serious to the fucking fat shaming ridiculous. Can one ignore a tag like x trump Why yes you can! By putting it on mute! Cue the choir- hallelujah!

Funny but yesterday I was at Walgreens in search of real black licorice. Only one company makes any that’s worth a damn, and Walgreens is the only place to buy it. (“Red Vines” by what used to be called “The American Licorice Company” until they renamed themselves to “Red Vines” because that horrid red shit is 95% of what their ignorant 'Murrican customers buy. Twizzlers (the competing brand) are nasty crap.)

Anyhow, they had only a little bit of the licorice, but boxes and boxes and boxes of rolled NECCO wafers. I took note at the time and almost bought a roll for nostalgia’s sake. I don’t eat much candy and would probably have eaten one or two wafers and pitched the rest.

Agree their very flavorless flavor is a lot of the traditional appeal.

Hardly. The existence of that tag and the moderator efforts to apply it are totally due to ATMB complaints about wanting a way to filter out trump threads. This is a new development in the last week-ish.

So thanks for helping to spread the news about this new feature.

No doubt there will be someone posting soon about how do I do that?
Smartest people on the planet?
Q. E. D.!

I am baffled. You said two posts above that you know how to do it (filter out trump) because you’d done it. Now it sounds like you didn’t / don’t know.

Color me confused.

I think @chela figured out how to mute a particular individual thread but not how to batch-mute every single thread with that tag.

Or that’s how I read it, anyway …

Hell, I didn’t even know the tags provided that level of functionality, either.

Yes really you can mute all threads with a particular tag. Also can mute/ignore people threads and forums too!

Thank you, that was it!

Apparently, my brain has a good “ignore” feature. For decades, people here have lamented the posts referring to a particular topic, or been annoyed by a particular poster, and I think “Huh, I don’t remember @SoAndSo posting in that thread.” I go back and there they are!

What happened was, when I noticed someone was being racist, ignorant, or just spouting The Party Line and not adding anything to the conversation, I tuned them out and just skimmed past their comments. Without even being aware that I was doing it.

I think this place helped me develop this superpower (gradually… I certainly didn’t have it back in the paper towel tube days, when I could’ve used it).

So, I don’t need to put a topic or person on Ignore, because my brain does it automatically … here’s a toast to the human brain and how it protects us from idiocy!

I discovered years ago that my mouse has an incredible feature called a “scroll wheel” which allows me to go past anything I find offensive, or even not of interest to me. It can be used while reading threads, and even when looking at lists of threads. I also find it useful when I’m on Facebook to get past the umpteenth time someone has posted a meme or other otem which I’ve seen umpteen times.

no real surprise … I did “divest” this business for Nestlé in 2009/10 in my country.

so basically Nestlé is getting out of the frozen food business on a global scale … just like Unilever did years before that, and also - quite possibly - of the ice-cream business (as they share normally a supply chain, and one is not really feasible w/out the other …

According to the press release from Nestle, they are refocusing the business on categories that include “confectionery, coffee, ice cream, premium water and pet food”. I don’t see anything in the current brand lineup that looks like ice cream, but they listed it as one of their priorities.

IOW, Nestle is abandoning the quality frozen food business in order to focus on ice cream, candy, and cat food. Because that’s where the big profit margins are.

If every business responded that way to the distribution challenges of a large country with a low population density, Canadian humans would all starve, leaving behind only cats and dogs, who would however have their normal diets supplemented by abundant candies and ice cream.

Has anyone checked on Canada lately?

If no one’s there, we should take care of the cats and dogs…

I think things are fine, but I asked my cats, and they said

STARVING! BRING CATFOOD!!!

We will be having a conversation about telling fibs later tonight.

You want real black licorice? You need to go to a hardware store or farm store. Seriously, they have the best.

And emaciated deceased Canadians. At least for the first couple of weeks. Fortunately in colder climes they keep better than they would in the tropics or desert southwest of the USA.

Any idea of brands. I used to live where farm stores were handy by and I don’t recall anything relevant. Nor at hardware stores in any of teh several cities I’ve lived in around the country…

Those of us who went through the fire last year dont enjoy hearing the alarm, especially since most of us were asleep. We did hustle downstairs. Maybe dont cook so late, if do, be more careful.

Wicked storm blew through yesterday evening, knocked out power. That was not a big deal, really, as I had salad, wine, Oreos, and my iPad. Had a perfectly fine candlelit dinner, went to bed early with the Ryobi battery fan keeping me from stewing.

The PITA is this morning because I still don’t have internet. We have fiber here and that looks to be fine, but there’s something in my husband’s insane office full of electronics that got turned off, I think, and I don’t know what it might be. I turned the firewall on, did a reset on the Wi-Fi and everything else I could think of … nuthin’.

I can obviously access the internet through the iPad, but I want my desktop, dammit! And as he’s in IL and it’s barely 6:30am here, I guess I need to suck it up :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

Friday we were at a brewery in the little town of Vandergrift when suddenly police, fire, and SWAT vehicles filled the streets. Cops in full riot gear walked by, motioning for us to stay inside. People were freaking out. Someone eventually saw a post on Facebook about the situation.

The guy was captured hiding in the basement of a building, but for a few hours we were pretty spooked. I commented that the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board required pubs to offer Happy Hour pricing in situations like this, which got applause. The owner agreed. Everyone started drinking again.

Fun time, but a little bit scary.

There was a brand from Australia that I can’t remember the name but was really good. There is also Wiley Wallaby, which is supposed to sound Australian but I don’t think it actually is. Next time I’m at the farm supply store buying bird seed I’ll keep an eye out. (I don’t buy candy anymore because I need to keep the blood sugar down.)

I’ll second the Wiley Wallaby endorsement. I despise licorice, but love their other flavors. My wife likes their licorice. She’s also a fan of Gimbal’s Licorice Scottie Dogs.
