For the past few weeks I have been getting “Reels and Short Videos” popping up on my Facebook feed. They are almost always clips of scantily/suggestively clad females dancing. There doesn’t seem to be any way to stop this. No matter how many times I click “Hide”, which claims that I will see “fewer posts like this” they keep showing up. I’ve tried searching for ways to control this, but can’t find anything.
Although I suppose it’s better than the ads that I used to get all the time (no, I’m not interested in selling my home, buying cosmetics, etc).
Same advice works for Twitter/X. If Zuck does accept the offer of a fight that Elmo seems to challenge him to whenever Elmo is high on ketamine, it would be just and fitting if they beat each other senseless.
Elmo is an Afrikaaner… someone who could give de Klerk a run for his money in terms of racist entitlement. That said, the best new internet curse might just end up being, “Zuck You!!!”
Invalid assumption. Facebook allows me to stay in contact with friends and family, as well as a members of a number of organizations which provide me with amusement and information I would otherwise not have access to.
I do not do Twitter, TikTok, or any other forms of social media because I’ve never felt any reason to do so. But Facebook does provide some benefit to my life. Anything on Facebook that annoys me I try to avoid; hence my complaint when it is difficult to do so.
It’s a ‘Meh’ situation. Twitter is just bone-heads spouting Mein Kampf, GQP talking point lies, and 2A Love as if the gun was a ribbed dildo that got them off nightly before they went to sleep.
Someday I can only hope that the ATF, FBI, and Homeland Security does a Massive Sweep to pick up all of the domestic terrorists spouting there. That’s Twitter.
Face-Zuck… well yeah I do hate Zuck’s secret police way of gaining data from families and friends who just want to share family pics, jokes, and memes. But then how would I keep in contact with distant family that I’m barely in contact with? College friends who live too far away to visit? Nieces, Nephews, distant cousins? City, State, and Town announcements?
I mean… it Zucks… but it’s almost a necessary evil for me.
I use email for all those purposes. Precisely so Zuck et al are not listening in. That’s kinda Luddite of me I know.
But it works if people are willing to do anything other than the easiest laziest thing. Which laziest thing, oh by the way, includes selling their digital soul to the devil almost from the first click.
My life is so serene since I stopped trying to keep up with anyone. Quarantining taught me how much I love silence, and having no demands on me (especially from distant relatives and old friends).
Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your point of view) my family is fairly close-knit and I actually like keeping in touch with them and swapping amusing posts. Facebook is the lesser of two evils; e-mailing or texting them would be more time-consuming than my weekly check-in to let them know that I’m alive and well since I left Chicago for the wilds of NC.
People generally do things because the perceived benefit outweighs the drawbacks. Some people may miscalculate the drawbacks, especially if they are a long time off - that is human nature, not laziness. I left Facebook after documenting the number of negative interactions compared to positive ones, coming up mostly negative and acknowledging that it was bad for me. But everyone is going to have a different negative-to-positive ratio. The idea that it’s the consumers who sold their souls takes the accountability from Zuckerberg et. al which is in my opinion where the real judgement belongs.
My gf works from home. On Friday she heard what sounded like an explosion outside. When she went out to see what had happened, she saw a HUGE cherry tree had fallen in the horse pasture in an area we call The Bottoms. The tree had taken another tree part of the way down but it got caught up in a third tree.
The cherry tree was bigger than I can handle with my chainsaws, plus the leaner was under significant tension. I don’t want to die using my chainsaw, so we called the tree service we use for stuff I cannot handle.
Cherry tree leaves contain enough cyanide to kill a horse if they eat enough. The tree service can’t come out for a week. So part of the weekend was spent constructing a temporary fence to keep the horses safe. Anyone wanna buy some horses?
Most of the “negative interactions” I’ve had on Facebook have been caused by Facebook itself - the previously mentioned deluge of ads and, now, reels. There have been things posted that annoy me, in which case I use the scroll button and ignore them. I’ve never been subjected to anything remotely resembling personal attacks,
As far as the claims that Zuckerberg is doing anything with the personal data I post, I’ve seen no evidence of it. I don’t respond to polls or “What LotR character are you?” quizzes, and my Facebook profile is bare-bones.
I gave up on FB for good during the run up to the 2020 election. I just got tired of trying to sift through all the political BS in order to keep up with friends and family. It’s funny, my wife who is still semi-active on FB is probably more in touch with my family and old college friends than I am!
