Augusto Pinochet dead.

Wasn’t sure if anyone else already posted this.

I predicted that it would happen in the Death Pool. Only problem is, it happened too early, so I won’t get the points.

What do you mean, too early? It happened 32 years to late.

I am going to run out of dancing shoes this year, first Botha, now Pinochet.

Margaret Thatcher is said to be “greatly saddened” by his death and will be sending “deepest condolences” to Gen Pinochet’s widow and family. Well that’s all right then!

You just wait till it’s turn you old witch. I hear your grave is going to be licensed. for dancing

This breaking news just in: Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.

Victor Jara and thousand of others, tortured and killed. I grew up among Chilean refugees. Normal families who had to flee their country because they happened to be left of centre, or related to someone who was. Too bad this isn’t the pit.

The sad thing is that even in his death, he continues to divide his people. I also read that he will be buried with military honours but will not receive a state funeral. Too right. I mean, not only did he kill and torture all those people, he also stole $27m and allegedly profited from the cocaine trade. Maybe if he’d drowned a few kittens they would have stripped him of his rank as well?

I was reading a “dancing on dead dictators’ graves” discussion elsewhere and someone said (about another leader, who is yet to croak)

and

FYI, I’ve just started two GD threads – one on Pinochet’s legacy, the other on U.S. involvement in his coup.

Way to steal my thunder, while riding my coattails.

j/k

Good riddens to bad rubbish, says I.

Cut me some slack, I’ve been waiting to start those threads ever since I read this last week.

Are the points redeemable for anything?

Yesterday, I read the headline and said to my boyfriend, “Augusto Pinochet is finally dead, that bastard!” He said, “Who???”

Yes, but let´s make sure!; I suggest that every year they dug out Pinnochio and hang him for a while to make sure that, he too, is still dead.

Actually we are organising a party in Trafalgar Square for the Saturday after. I’m sure someone will be able to put you up if you wanted to travel down.

In the meantime you should learn the lyrics to the song to be played at her funeral.

To bastardize Bette Davis:

I was taught to speak only good of the dead. Pinochet is dead.

Good.

I have been thinking about this. Pinochet and Castro are like evil twins. We can project on them what we like.

Right-wing nut cases praise Pinochet for saving the Chilean economy, while ignoring the Caravan of Death.

Left-wing head cases praise Castro for advances in education and whatnot, but turn a blind eye to his mercenaries in Africa, his prisons, his quarantine of AIDS people.

Perhaps we need to go back to our basic values. The people of Cuba and Chile ought to have been allowed to find their own destinies by themselves, without the guidance of strong men. Imperfect as it is, democracy would have been better for both nations.

I´d rather condemn both, it´s one of the few joys of centrism. But at the end of the day I think Pinochet ratches above Castro in the evil scale; besides being a coward for hidding behind his act of “I´m an ill, old man” to avoid being held responsible for his crimes.

Yeah, but Castro hung (or is hanging) around like Grant hung around Richmond. Generations of Cubans under his nanny-state. Yikes! In truth we do not have any good numbers of the people Castro killed.

I figured that I’d get the response of who the Hell is that, so I didn’t mention this death.
