Thank you for introducing me to the concept of fried corn. This weekend, inspired by the idea of fried corn, my friends and I had an entirely fried dinner. We did a bloomin’ onion, deep fried rice balls, fried green tomatoes, chicken fried steak, fried corn (of course) and…I kid you not—fried ice cream. It was fantastic. We’re already planning a second one, where we’ll have fried zucchini, fried okra, and jalapeno poppers.
Mmmm, that sounds good. I love fried food, even if my heart or my figure doesn’t!
WOW!!! That sounds like DINNER!!!
(dang, now I’ve got to head over to the “based on mashed po -ahHEM - tatos” restaurant for chicken fried steak!)
Dinner Date for tomorrow, anyone?
If you’ve found a decent chicken fried steak anywhere in the Bay Area, I’m there! So far I’ve had to get several hours away and find a truck stop (or make it myself ;))
Forgive the stupid northerner, but is chicken fried steak, actually steak? or is it just another way to fry chicken?
Look at a big piece of fried chicken. See the luscious crunchy seasoned batter lovingly encasing it? Now imagine that wrapped around some oh-so-tender thin “cubed” steak.
Damn - I should have eaten breakfast.
OK, thanks. For a second there I thought it might have been chicken for some reason.
Up north here it is usually called ‘country fried steak’
It is very yummy though Although very bad for the cholesterol!
Chicken fried steak is one of those things that “when it’s good, it’s very, very good, but when it’s bad, it’s horrid”. Same goes for the gravy that goes with it.
miamouse–us southerners will chicken fry anything. You can chicken fry steak, venison (chicken fried backstrap–mmmm…), chicken, fish, you name it.
Ok!!! Sold!!! Your place it is!!!
Actually, found really good CFS at a little place (“Pete’s”) down in the Blossom Hill part of San Jose,
and at a truck stop up on 80, not far from the Scandia Mini-Golf place (which is also near the Bud Brewery – which gives tours … AND more importantly, the Jelly Belly Candy Factory – which gives tours --)
How did you make the bloomin onion? I have only had that at Outback steakhouse.
Where’s the link to the thread with the fried corn recipe?
Do a google search for “fried corn recipe.” There’s not a recipe on the thread; auntie em was just excited about having fried corn for dinner. I thought it sounded good, so I found a recipe. It’s yummy, and I highly recommend it.
Ahem. So my invite to this shindig must have gotten lost in the mail then, hmmmm, October?
Okay.
auntie em, you didn’t get your invitation?? damn USPS…
Ah, to have a car! It’s this sort of thing that makes me want my own vehicle :dubious: Most of the time I am fine with not having to park… since in San Francisco it’s usually not possible anyway. We had a cajun restaurant that did marvelous CFS, but it closed (to be replaced by yet another Thai place. Yes, we were running short of them grumble) There are good places in Ukiah and Willits, which are on the way to visit my mom, but we don’t make that trip as much as I would like.
I’kk send out an alert if I feel like cooking, but the weather’s been too warm for much of that lately. (I know I am a wimp and it’s much hotter everywhere else, but I don’t care… the weather should conform to my demand!)
Hey, I grew up in Ukiah! Well, all right, I spent my teens there, but that’s plenty, for Ukiah. But I don’t think I ever had chicken fried steak there.
There’s a couple good places out here, now. Maybe I’ll pick some up for dinner tonight.
oh my cow! i am still stuffed silly from fried night with october.
here’s a piece of random chicken fried steak trivia that i should not know:
in the movie, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, she’s in some po-dunk southern town and she stops at a gas station but there’s no gas. in the background there is a country song playing and the words are, “chicken fried steak, oh chicken fried steak, what i really need is some chicken fried steak.”
i haven’t seen that movie in probably 10 years but i still sing that song!
Isabelle, the bloomin’ onion recipe was brought by a friend. i think he googled it.
