G’day, as an Aussie I am very interested to hear from fellow dopers what they consider to be the great Australian Movies. Just tying to get a flavour of what people around the world enjoy and also to share, if you havent seen any of these then do yourselves a favour and do it!
My nominations are:
[ul]
[li]The Man from Snowy River[/li][li]Mad Max[/li][li]Romper Stomper[/li][li]BMX Bandits (joke entry)[/li][li]Gallipoli[/li][li]Strictly Ballroom[/li][li]Muriel’s Wedding[/li][li]Chopper[/li][li]Rabbit Proof Fence[/li][li]The Chant of Jimmy Blacksmith[/li][/ul]
it’s interesting to note that the stars of most these have all gone on to become Hollywood stars!
For a great, recent Australian movie, Animal Kingdom. And depending on your definition of “Australian film,” Lore was directed by an Australian with a mostly Australian crew and was Australia’s entry for the foreign-language Oscar, even though it’s set in Germany and the dialogue is in German. That’s a fantastic movie.
Not yet mentioned, the sequential coming of age films The Year My Voice Broke and the rather better Flirting ( starring a young Thandie Newton and Nicole Kidman ).
The riveting story of a quirky group of prospective Aussie lawyers who move to the US for the biggest exam of their life.
Of the ones listed so far, i love Breaker Morant, Romper Stomper, Gallipoli, Rabbit Proof Fence, and some of the quirky comedies like The Castle and Muriel’s Wedding.
Some others to add to the list:
[ul]
[li]The Boys - chilling crime drama[/li][li]The Sum of Us - fun light drama/comedy about the relationship between a man and his gay son[/li][li]Lantana - excellent psychological/crime drama[/li][li]Bad Boy Bubby - very strange black comedy[/li][li]Little Fish - low-budget drama with great performance (as usual) by Cate Blanchett[/li][li]Shine - awesome Oscar-winning performance by Geoffrey Rush[/li][li]Two Hands - Fun crime comedy with Bryan Brown and a very young Heath Ledger.[/li][/ul].
I’ve always enjoyed The Castle a great little movie. Givne that a lot of the laughs rely on what I take to be fairly heavy Australian stereotypes, I’m curious to hear how transplantable the humour is to a non-Australian?
