Australian Movies

Australia? I’m afraid you’re 1,500 miles out!

I’m from England and I got it:

  • the battle between a close-knit family and the might of the State
  • ignorance of the legal system being balanced by friendliness making an incredibly useful ally

I was a bit disconcerted by the occasional rudeness, but that happens all over the World.

I started to mention that one earlier. It’s a really good documentary.

In the category of Important Work of Art, Breaker Morant.

In the category of fun entertainment, Children of the Revolution.

As an euro, I’m fairly surprised at the exclusion of picnic at hanging rock, which I would consider easily the third best known Aussie movie worldwide after Mad Max and Babe.

I was talking about sisu’s OP: since he’s an Aussie himself I wondered if PAHR is one of those movies better considered outside it’s country of origin.

:smack:

Everyone I know who’s seen The Castle (in America), had no problem relating to it and agreed with me that it was great!

I’m not Australian but I never really got Picnic at Hanging Rock. To me it’s one of those “tone poem” movies that could only be made in the 1970s (like those films of Terence Malick or Michael Cimino) - it’s slow, hypnotic, beautifully filmed and makes you go “woah that was deep man … could it be aliens?” But it didn’t leave any lasting impression other than being trippy. Good film-school movie, though.

Oh, no, I agree absolutely. What I meant is that it’s quite well known, as Australian movies go.

Paperback Hero - Hugh Jackman starred in this romcom before he got famous from Xmen. A cross-country trucker writes a romance novel that breaks big; his editors in Sydney don’t know he’s a he because he uses a female pen name that happens to be the actual name of his best female friend. He’s scared for everyone to find out the truth so he persuades the friend to keep up the charade and pose as “him” for the scheduled interview tour. Hilarity and/or romance and/or many songs by the Traveling Wilburies ensue.

I freely admit I enjoy Young Einstein - its just so stupid and ridiculous it comes back around to charming.

That is a film from New Zealand, isn’t it?

Even though we’re locked in combat for The Greatest Prize In Sport, I’ll have to admit I’m a big fan of Aussie Films.

I like plenty of the above and I’ll add:
Summerfield
Harlequin
Long Weekend

I’d always thought that Spotswood and Frauds were Aussie films as well, but according to imdb they’re American.

Add NZ to the mix, Goodbye Pork pie is an entertaining romp.

What, it’s not the same place?

The Hunter was alright.
In Her Skin was good, and disturbing. (true crime story)
Primal was a decent low-budget horror flick.
Speaking of horror, let’s never forget The Howling III: The Marsupials. No matter how much you’d like to.
