Does anyone know of a good site or book describing the fauna of Australia prior to human habitation, say 60,000 BCE? I’m curious as to just how big kangaroos, wombats, thylacine, lizards, predatory birds and such got back then.
A Google search on “Australia megafauna” is a good start.
I’m not sure if this covers the same topics that you want, but it could be useful:
The Future Eaters: An Ecological History of the Australian Lands and People
By Tim Flannery
See the Amazon site for details
“The Future Eaters” is a good general overview of Australian history. However it covers about 100 million years, so not surprisingly it lacks details in specific areas such as this.
A far better book for this specific area is Wildlife of Gondwana” by Rich & Rich. Good overview. Lots of pictures and although it as some African and South American stuff it is mostly Australian.
Seriously though, most of this information is freely available on the web. Unless you have a real desire to own something like that you could probably save yourself 60 bucks.
