Automotive experts: Camry problem

I have a 1990 Camry LE which works well enough except for a fairly recent and annoying problem. When I press my CRUISE CONTROL button, the green LED blinks five times and then stays on, and the cruise control doesn’t work.

I’m hoping this is a minor electrical problem, but the owner’s manual and Toyota’s website are silent on the matter. Even the Haynes maintenance manual has scant info.

This might not be your problem, but usually you have to keep your foot on the gas so that CC will engage. If your foot is off the gas it won’t work.

I don’t have a Toyota, but I have this problem sometimes.

Call a toyota dealer, or register and post the question at www.clubsc3.com. They are pretty knowledgable.

I don’t know the details of this system, but I think it’s a pretty sure bet that the blinking you describe is an indication that an operational fault has been recognized by the system’s control module. My first guess would be an improper speed sensor input, but that’s certainly not the only possibility. It’s going to take some testing to sort out the problem.

My Mitchell manuals for that year don’t have cruise control info. I suspect you’ll need to go to a Toyota dealership for this one.
