Autonumbered lists in Word

Is there a way to automatically convert an autonumbered list in Microsoft Word to regular text?

I want the section numbers like “8.1.1” to remain in the file, so I don’t want to remove numbering completely–I just want them converted to editable text.

If the section is just plain text, you could cut the entire section (CTRL-X) and then use Edit -> Paste Special to paste it as Unformatted Text.

However, you will lose all the formatting (including bold, italic, etc.) if you do that, so that might not be a practical choice…
