Auughhh! I missed it!

Star 98.7 is having one of their Totally '80s holiday weekends. I hit the button just in time to hear the fadeout of “Tarzan Boy”. That song is one of the few reasons I even tune in for their '80s binges! And I missed it!

:::holding out hope for “Puttin’ On the Ritz”:::

80s songs I keep an ear out for:

“One Night In Bangkok” by Murray Head.
“Don’t Turn Around” by After The Fire. I wouldn’t mind the Falco original though.
“Town Called Malice” by The Jam.
For some reason I actually want to hear songs by ABC now.
“Puttin’ On The Ritz” and Taco were pretty fun though.

Pop did have a few good moments in the 80s.

I think I’m turning Japanese, I think I’m turning Japanese, I really think so…

I think that’s 80’s. Maybe early 90’s. The first time I heard that, I cracked right up.

Here in Houston we have an all 80s, all the time station. Yay me.

In the supermarket tonight I heard: This Charming Man (Smiths) The Look of Love (ABC) and Bad Boys (Wham). Hard to tear myself away. I’m sure I missed Hold Me Now.

Well there’s VH1 Classic if you have that. They just did “Glory Days” and now it’s something by the Pretenders.

Sorry if my post seems so “well why don’t you do that.” It’s knee-jerk. But I mean it in the nicest possible terms, I assure you.

Osiris: I didn’t take it that way at all. But I can’t watch TV while I’m on the net.

widdershins: Most of the '80s songs I like, I already own. “Tarzan Boy” is just one of the few that eludes me.

jinwicked: Do they play obscure stuff, or just “Sweet Child 'o Mine” and “Pride in the Name of Love” over and over like Star 98 does?

Um…they play all kinds of 80s, new wave, rock, pop… they play a lot of stuff that I recognize and some I don’t. (I was a little kid in the 80s.) Tom Petty, Devo, Supertramp, Billy Idol, Billy Joel, a lot of those one-hit wonders that I forget… uh. I think they have a lower frequency of repeat songs than your typical top 40 station.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard them play the two songs you mentioned.

Oh, I have Tarzan Boy on mp3 if you want it.

Ooh! Can you send it? Mille grazie!

I’ll have you young whippersnappers know that the 80’s was the last great decade of rock and roll music. Ever since the 90’s r & r has been corporated into a monotonous homogenous blend of pretty little artists that look good on video and have very little to say musically. Just so you know.

I disagree. There is a lot of good music being made right now, most of it just isn’t played on the radio.

Rilchiam, check your e-mail.

We’ve got a pretty good station for 80’s - plays music of the “80’s, 90’s, 70’s, and today” as they say it. Not a bad blend, usually. They tend to get repetitive, but it goes in waves - they appear to change their playlist every couple of months, by adding in a bunch of “new” (as in, we weren’t playing this song last month) music into the regular mix. They play more of the “rock” end than the “pop” end. No ABC, no Cure or Smiths or HoJo, unfortunately; some Duran Duran, lots of Bon Jovi and GNR.

Tarzan Boy. That one’s not ringing any bells with me. Maybe someone could hum a few bars?

Perhaps you remember it from the Listerine commericials, with the bottle swinging through the trees on a vine like Tarzan?
“Oh-oh-oh-woah-oh-woah-oh-woah-oh-WOAH-oh-oh”
That took far more effort than I want to admit. But I’ll cop to the fact that I bought the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 soundtrack because there’s a remix of Tarzan Boy on there. The horror, the horror.

jinwicked, I got the e-mail. Thank you! (In case I didn’t reply; I forget if I did or not.)

No problem. <just got a cable modem installed. Woo!>

Whoops… how’d that happen? I’m not Jewish. But I did just get a cable modem installed…

Semicolon plus lower-case j produces the smiling Orthodox guy.
