Av Cable used as a stereo converter

I want to get a male 3.5mm stereo to dual rca cable with a right angle bend in it and 12 ft long.

the catch is the only one I can find is an AV cable (it has the 3rd rca) will it work for the stereo purposes?

Not knowing exactly what you’re attempting to do with it…the cable doesn’t know if it’s carrying audio or video.

If the 3.5 mm phone plug is a four-conductor type meant to be used on certain portable DVD players and video games, it may not work correctly.

Go to your local Radio Shack (assuming you’re in the US). They should have exactly what you need.

The cable you have in the OP will probably not work - it has 4 conductors in the 3.5mm plug (like **QED **refers to). The longest one I could find at RadioShack was 6ft (which you probably already discovered).

The ones in this link should work, and go up to 25 ft:

They are a bit overpriced, but all I could find quickly.

this is true but I am not plugging it into an av jack, just an audio jack. It will fit in the hole well enough but my question is will it still carry a stereo signal. I thought I had one to test but cant find the damn thing.

Jas09 nice find, but yeah thats way over what I was looking to spend.

as for radio shack the 6 footers were all that came up, and the last time I went in there after a cable they wanted to sell me a 3 foot long svideo cable for almost 40$…it was kinda insane.

The problem is thus:

On an AV cable (according to the one I just tested with a multimeter), the contacts from tip to sleeve go Left Audio, Video, Ground, Right Audio, whereas on a mini stereo jack they go Left Audio, Right Audio, Ground. Depending on the specific construction of the stereo jack you’re plugging into, the ground contact in the jack will make connection with either the ground or right audio contact on your AV plug (or both). If it does make contact with the ground ring on the plug, you could use the AV cord plugging the Left (white) plug as usual, and the Video (yellow) plug into the Right (red) jack.

Yes, that’s exactly what I was saying. To re-iterate, wheather or not all the plugs work with your situation is dependent on what you’re doing. But the wires do not care wheather they carry a video or audio signal. As far as the wire is concerened, a signal is a signal is a signal. Put it in one end and it’ll come out the other.
