Avatar: Seven Havens on Paramount Plus (spoilers after first post)

The third animated series in the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise dropped its first three episodes on Paramount Plus yesterday.

This is a discussion thread. Spoilers after this post.

Okay, so I knew going in that the series would feature twin sisters Pavi and Nisha, but what I didn’t see coming, because the showrunners kept it a big secret, was that both of them are Avatars. We don’t learn that until the very end of the first episode. I actually said out loud, “Two of them?” when that was revealed.

Nisha has been kept a secret for the last three years, training with the captain of the Bending Brigade and the members of the Order of the White Lotus, while Pavi has been instinctively hiding, because it’s the law that every bender must join the Bending Brigade. Apparently, fewer and fewer genders are being born every year, and the Haven of Ellora needs them to protect and serve the city.

But Pavi has no interest in that. She’d always suspected she was the Avatar but had hoped it wasn’t true. She doesn’t want to fight anyone, and indeed in Chapter 3, Pavi and Nisha get into a fight when Pavi gets freaked out by how Nisha went to town on a training dummy with all four elements.

I think it’ll be good for them that Jae is taking over their training.

I didn’t know anything about the new series coming into it, but I’ve finished watching the first two episodes. At first I wasn’t happy with the changes in animation style, but I stopped noticing it after a while. This one seems to be at a level for a bit younger audience than the previous two series. It isn’t bad, though.

13 episodes this season and episodes 2-4 have already been approved, so we’re looking at probably at least 50 episodes, which is pretty refreshing for a change in this “10 episodes and cancelled” era.

When they get down to one, the species is in big trouble!

Bah autocorrect.

Thanks for posting this, I didn’t realize that this show was a thing. I knew that Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender was coming out - or had just come out by now, but I hadn’t seen anything about Seven Havens.

I watched the three available episodes and I did enjoy them. I was especially impressed by the characterization of Karthik and Jae and I’m happy to see Dee Bradley Baker voicing the cat-monkeys. I also thought that the energy monster, or whatever it was, looked very interesting and I would like to see where that came from and what it is.

I stopped watching. It isn’t that it is a different style, it’s that it is old Saturday morning cartoon cheap animation. Enjoying the art is part of enjoying animated shows and this is just not that.

Huh. After the first 3 episodes I thought it would be one episode per week, but nope, 3 more this week, 2 next week, and 4 the week after that. I haven’t watched the new three yet.

This week, for the first time, we learned that the Anomaly hasn’t gone away but that the Bending Brigade is fighting a losing battle trying to (in a very literal sense) keep it covered up. But the number of Afflicted is growing, and they’re all terrified of the Avatars.
