Avatar: What Am I Supposed To "Take Home" From Seeing It?

What I took home was that a good ol’ American white boy can in three months do everything that primitive natives can do better than they can do it and that without the white man’s assistance, those poor savages never could have organized or fought back. Thank goodness a good white man was there to show them the way.

There are good white people and bad white people. There are no good or bad natives because they exist in Edenic simplicity and innocence doing what they have always done. They are a valuable cultural resource for white people, who can learn to appreciate and even adopt native ways and gain from native knowledge, but must guide them to use their cultural heritage wisely. Native people cannot do this for themselves, are passive without white guidance, and are incapable of understanding or relating to sophisticated white culture. If they cannot successfully drive off the evil white people (with the guidance and leadership of the good white people) they will die because they cannot adapt as white people can.

Agreed, Alan. It was pretty much Dancing With Elves.
