Avatars

Maybe we can take up a collection and buy them a copy.

Whoa. Déjà vu.

Well, there’s one in every crowd.

Have those annoying avatars been kept in a mayonnaise jar on Funk and Wagnall’s porch since noon today?

:smiley:

The other big avatar thread linked in my post has most of this info but here are the basic steps:

  1. If you use Firefox and don’t have the Greasemonkey add-on, install it first. (Greasemonkey – Get this Extension for 🦊 Firefox (en-US))

  2. Once you have the add-on, or if you use Chrome which supports user scripts natively, install the SDMB Avatar script. (Dance Party)

Once the user script is installed, without any further configuration required, you will see Avatars in SDMB posts by any poster who has either;

a) uploaded an image to their SDMB profile (Charter members, mods, admins, etc.)

or

b) added the following line anywhere within their SDMB profile: ‘SDMB Avatar: [URL to avatar]’

To add your own avatar so you and other users of the script see it by your posts:

  1. Host an image somewhere (there are many free sites for this like photobucket, imageshack, flickr, etc.)

  2. Add a line anywhere in your SDMB profile, under ‘bio’ or ‘location’, etc. with the URL to that image.

You can see an example in my profile.

To view instructions for assigning custom avatars to individual posters or for changing the default size that avatars are displayed in posts, see the source code of the script. (click “Source Code” at the installation link above).

There are screenshots and other info including how to use it as a javascript link on iPhones, and the history of the development of the script in the other big avatar thread.

As far as I know there is no easy or reliable way to make user scripts work in IE, at least not by me. I have seen articles online about trying to make user scripts work in IE, so I would leave that as an exercise for those inclined to investigate.

Happy Avataring.

[Urge to kill…rising…:D]

Here you go. I chose this shot so the people who don’t like/want them can see that if you don’t enable them, the view of the board is the same. There is no blank spot where the avatar would be.

I used tinypic dot com. No need to sign up for just one upload.

I’m loving seeing them.

Wow, I’m really surprised by how many people are using them!

Edit: Doesn’t seem to be working for me, though. :frowning: I’m seeing everyone else’s avatars and I put a link in my biography section but mine isn’t showing up for me.

Your link is entered perfectly. It will show up soon. It can take up to an hour before you and other users will begin seeing it appear in your posts because the script only checks a profile a maximum of once per hour to avoid unnecessary traffic. (I keep meaning to remember to add this to the instructions.)

Ah, I see. And there it is! Thanks a bunch, I guess you’ve made a convert.

When I got the new script link, I changed one line:

var imgsize=“50”;
to
var imgsize=“100”;

It’s great! If some people prefer them scaled down, that’s cool. But I have the internet and computing speed to view them at full size. Luvit!

Mein Fuhrer I can see my an avatar! :smiley:

One of the first things I did when I installed the script was change the size to 80x80. It’s a good compromise between “too small” and “too distracting”.

Any way the script can be modified or given the option of preventing animated avatars?

You can hit escape if there’s an animated avatar on any page, it will stop the animation.

Or you can link to your own picture for that user, like a 1x1 whitespace gif.

You realize that we’ve completely changed the tone and culture of the board and probably ruined everything forever?

At least Siam Sam and I are.
:slight_smile:

That actually sounds like a good thing.

Yea! I have an avatar even though I can’t personally see it. (at work anyways.)

Hurray?

Fuckin’ A! :cool:

Very unusual. I think it reflects positively on those using avatars here; a face with the name tells me they stand behind what they say.
