I agree. I just heard about this yesterday and I am big fan of the Dr Doom character and I have a compilation of Iron Man vs Doom where they pit their technological knowledge against each other. The Dr Doom character name is a bit like the Dr Strange name that it is not a made-up name. So to have him be an alternate Tony Stank does disservice to his back story. He is not simply an evil version of Tony Stark, he has completely different motivations.
As to can he be a big threat to the Avengers, In comic book terms, yes. He has gone up against some of the most powerful beings in the Universe and even re-programmed Ultron to be his personal robot. I really hope they can get a good Doom story line, but the RDJ announcement makes me doubtful because they are likely doing it so he can provide a different version of Stark.
On one hand, RDJ is a pretty good actor. On the other hand, it’s too bad that Fiege couldn’t find any other good actor alive today who could take on the roll.
I feel that he could play the roll very well but also there’s a “what’s the point” to it.
I actually like the Roger Corman version. Of course, it sucked, but it could have sucked a lot worse. The guy playing Doom was a horrible actor, but he had the perfect voice for a villain in an iron mask.
OK, I get that Galactus is traditionally a Fantastic Four villain, but he’s also the sort of villain who really does force the question “Why aren’t the Avengers dealing with this?”. He’s like Thanos, in that he really is a threat to the entire planet and beyond, the sort that you really do throw everything you have at him.
In late June, Feige confirmed that the film will be a period piece set in the 1960s and probably in an alternate universe rather than the main MCU continuity.
Since the FF are part of Avengers 5 & 6, that last clause may no longer be accurate.
So how will they integrate them with the modern-day heroes, then? Put them into some sort of stasis, like Captain America frozen in the ice? Or just have them be really old in the present day?
Wild guess with no support: at the last moment, Mister Fantastic can’t think of a way to stop Galactus; best he can do is open some kind of mad-scientist [air quotes]Time Portal[/air quotes], sending everyone at the scene — Galactus, the Fantastic Four, the guy who was delivering some mail, you name it — a good sixty years into the future: to a point where, with any luck, Earth’s tech will have advanced enough that humanity can now do more than stall for time.
Just one person’s opinion, but this makes it seem that the MCU is turning into Star Trek or Star Wars, in the sense that there really are only a couple good movies, and we all keep hoping that the next one will be the one that puts the franchise back on track.

Mama… are you awake? I couldn’t sleep. I haven’t slept in days. Last night in the dark, I looked at myself in the mirror and all I could see were the whites of my eyes… and I knew how scared I really was. Are you dreaming, Mama? Remember Abilene, Mama? How the towns clicked by and I begged you to stop the train? Lexington, Nashville, Little Rock. I was sick for a thousand miles… and I hated you for it. Well, Mama, you sleep. Me, I’m getting off this train.
