I would like to know of a freeware or shareware program that will convert .avi multimedia files to MPEG or QuickTime format. This can be either a Windows or a Macintosh program, but it is important that the program recognize and capably translate all (or damn nearly all) of the modern codecs used in AVI files. If it is a Windows program, it would be awfully nice if it would run under Win95 rather than requiring NT or W2K.
The Mac QuickTime software has the inherent capability of reading and converting AVI but many of the more modern and commonly used codecs are not supported.
I’m not having any problems playing AVI files under Windows. I am having problems playing AVI files under MacOS. They don’t play natively on the Mac; they must be converted to QuickTime, either directly or indirectly by way of MPEG format. They can be converted under Windows for later playback on a Mac or they can be converted on a Mac.
The built-in converter that comes as part of QuickTime does not handle all of the codecs used by AVI files. Therefore either I need a 3rd-party newer/better Macintosh converter program or else I need a good solid Windows converter program. They key here is conversion, though, not mere playback.
